Dusty - looks a great spot (are they allowed to do this ?) - always thought that everyone (bar cable) was `locked` into BT at least for line rental. If this is genuine, I will move asap - use the phone line little except for internet - was always annoyed that I needed to pay a standard line rental.

Might be able to take one of your bargains up for a change `cos it doesn`t involve the cheapest Safeway in the world 8)

Check out the terms and conditions. You will be tied in to a 12 month contract and unable to use another provider for landline calls.Internet provider and 1471 and 1571 services are not affected.

I`m happy sticking to call18866 (most international calls 1ppm) & UK calls 1ppm (mobile 10ppm weekday and 2ppm weekend). Depending on calls you make, might be cheaper sticking with BT for rental and using another supplier for cheap/international calls!

i.e.: IT Australia is 27pm Call1886 is 1ppm :)

Can`t believe my timing though, I`ve phoned both Oz and the US today!

Niteowl.... How long have you been using the service? Is it pretty reliable? I`ve been using One-Tel but call18866 seems to beat it hands down. I don`t have a need to use it but the calls to US and Canadian mobiles are 1p per minute. Seems too good to be true (though I think in the US the receiver often has to pay to receive calls.. or at least used to).

1p per minute to the UK landlines anytime seems fine to me... and 1ppm to Spain I just have the standard £9.50 BT line rental which includes £2 of free BT calls anyway so I use them up on 0870 numbers.

BT is scrapping its standard tariff on 1 July. For those customers using BT for calls this isn't too bad, as it will be reducing its lowest BT Together discount package cost by £1, so the benefits and costs balance out. However all those people using Carrier Pre-Select, in other words paying BT line rental but using another company for calls - will be paying more for a discount package they never use. It is a subtle way for BT to increase its competitor's prices - an outrageous move.
