Zippy123 (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 9th May 2004, 15:32

Hi folks,

Has anyone bought one of these before
http://aldi.co.uk/specials_01_11/offers_nav.htm
Are they any good?

Apart from the excellent price, how do they compare with
www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk/search.php?p=697,698,678,515,666,667,668,576,574,510,509,445,368,352,315,296,164,523,608,609,611,668,675,733,761,762,2215,2217,2216,2219&bid=4

Zippy,

Bought one of these last year from Aldi when it was £349.00. Excellent piece of kit can`t fault it and for £270 is an even better bargin.

Jessam,

Thanks for feedback.

How different or similar is this offer from Aldi to that at Halfords, which is £399 at the moment? Click Here www.halfords.com/opd_product_details.asp?id=18886

It looks very similar, but the pocket PC looks very low spec at 266mhz with no CF card socket.
Most are 400mhz now days with bluetooth.

Still at £270!

Zippy,

Mine is the same as the Halfords (older model) It is limited with regards to not having the CF slot but I bought it for the Sat Nav, the only other thing I use it for is keeping the kids photos on it. The compromise is a lead to the receiver instead of blue tooth wire free, but for the money I paid I can live with it.

I`ve been thinking about one too. One of the lads at work got one last time and swears by it.

I thought the spec was a little low on the Pocket PC too, but for the price it`s very good, and it does have memory card slots...MMC, smaller than CF and usable in lots of other stuff now too. I was looking for it on some European websites the other night, and their offer seems to be that they get TWO 256mb MMC cards, where we only get one here. Even so, one of those is about £40 to buy.

You can almost pay that price just for the SatNav software on it`s own, and that one at Halfords for £399 looks like the exact same model.

A £130 saving isn`t to be sniffed at.

I was just wondering if it`s a fully functioning Pocket PC too, will you be able to put any software you like on it?

Even at 266Mhz, it`s not that long ago that full size pc`s were running at that...lol :)

Still trying to convince myself I really need one, and don`t just WANT one...lol

Mark,

It is a fully functioning Pocket PC PDA as well as, so I think it`s great value at Aldi.

Also plays movies and mp3 as well. Limitations of course.

Supports Windows and has version of some of the Office Programs as well.

Did anyone get to the main difference that costs £130 yet?

All,

Just for some further info, check out this link to the Medion UK site www.medionshop.co.uk/ Select the PDA page, and then select PDA again.

Current price of £399 (as at Halfords), although no picture and still cannot see if there are any difference!

Any clues?

I don`t know, the only thing is Aldi don`t give you the model number, then we`d know for sure. Everything looks the same otherwise. Maybe it`s just Aldis` bargaining power over Halfords?

Have t wait until Thursday i guess to see the model number.

I think it`ll be the same as with the PCs though, they get a really good price for shifting volume. There may only be a certain number per store, but when you multiply it by the number of stores, then the number of countries they sell them in. It`s a good way for manufacturers to guarantee thousands of sales in just one week.

I worked it out with the PCs when I was looking to get one, and it was something like 20,000 PC sold in a week, if they all sold out. :)

Last time they did them store still had a couple a week or two later.
