Good spot, just been and got one for my 10yr old son for Xmas. He`s been wanting a camera for a while, but kids snapping away with film can get expensive, so we`ve avoided up to now. This is ideal. I always forget about them doing Aldi style `specials`.

Bargain for that price. I`ve just gave it a testing (you have to don`t ya...lol ;) ). It`s a 3mp (interpolated to 4mp if you want to) using a CMOS sensor as opposed to a CCD in more expensive cameras. I have a Fuji with a CCD and a Samsung with a CMOS, the Samsung pics are ok so long as there`s good light.

Just tried this indoors with the flash and the pics look ok, sound recorder works well, and the video mode shoots at 320x240 OR 640x480, so video that fills the TV screen is an option.

Nice bright LCD screen, nice menus, digital zoom lets you zoom in and out like you would with an optical zoom (ie using up and down buttons to zoom in and out in real time, not having to go into a menu and set how much zoom you want).

If I didn`t already have a couple of digi cameras I`d get one myself, ideal for your first foray into the digital camera world. No doubt I`ll have a `borrow` of it now and again.

The only downside was the supplied alkaline batteries only lasted about 5 minutes, but that`s the way with digital cameras, normal batteries just aren`t up to it. I`ll be giving him some NiMH rechargables to use which should last well going by past experience.

A good buy though, easliy worth twice the price looking at the specs. :)

I`d hate to disappoint you Mark...but it`s not a good buy at twice the price.
3MP (ignore the 4MP interpolated b******s), Poor lens and no optical zoom.

3MP with good lens and optical zoom is what you would get for just under £100 these days. Having said that, you won`t find such a beast at £50 - however, it may have been worth spending that little bit extra to get a quality camera with optical zoom.

cheers,
RM

Well my Kodak is on the blink, so i`m looking to replace it, after looking around I think the best buy i`ve found so far is the Vivitar V3765 for £79.99 at Argos. It is a genuine 3 mega pixel (5m with interpolation), a 3 x Optical and a 2 x Digital zoom. Does movie capture and sound recording also and has NTSC/Pal video output. Roger

Thanks for the advice Reestit, but I already have a couple of cameras, one with optical zoom, and am aware of digital camera specs, and the way they work. As I said it depends what you want and how much you want to spend. My Fuji with optical zoom was £400 when I got it nearly 4yrs ago, but now similar can be had for around £100, but I wouldn`t part with it because it has a good lens (and CCD) and gives really good photos.

But for this price, I still say this is a good camera, even the lens seems ok. Most of my web pics were taken with a Samsung camera with a CMOS sensor and they`re ok providing the lighting is ok.

For my intended use for my son, it`s not a big outlay should it get damaged, and has plenty functionality, photos, video clips, vioce recorder, and even webcam use.

Bought one of these last year for my 14 year old son.

Excellent value for money and has been well used.

Even my 3 year old can use it ! !

If money is tight, then this is ideal.

(NOTE: I also posted this in the similar thread regarding this camera from Somerfield. Just thought I`d post in both threads so that my query doesn`t get missed!)

Hi there! I saw an advert for this camera in a Somerfield leaflet.

Basically what really interests me about it is the built-in Voice Recorder. I have been look at other digital Voice recorders, and mp3 players which also do that, etc, and I noticed this camera. If the voice recording does what I want it to then this could be a good buy as I`d get a camera too!

So, those who have one of these cameras, could you tell me:-

1. How much voice recording you can do? 20 minutes? 1 hour? 2 hours?
2. What is the voice quality like? As good as a tape deck, or rather fuzzy?
3. Are there different qualities, eg. Normal, and `LP`?
4. Can the voice recording be transferred to a PC in some format, eg. WAV file or MP3?
5. The advert says it has 28MB card, which sounds like it should store a reasonable amount of speech, if not can extra cards be bought?

I`m keen to use it for recording quite large amounts, eg. an hour.

Any help appreciated!

Thanks!

I only had a little go of the one we got my son just to make sure it wasn`t faulty, but it`s all wrapped up now. I`m almost certain it said 9 hours recording time for the voice reorder, either that, or it was 9 hours on the mp3 players we got from Aria.

Not much help I know...sorry, but can`t remember which it was now. But it has plenty of functions for the price, and yes it does take additional MMC / SD memory cards. So you can increase storage space that way. The PC normally accesses a digital camera as if it were another drive, so no reason why you shouldn`t be able to get the audio off it.

I`m not sure what format the audio files are, but no doubt there`ll be convertors available if it`s not a native Windows format. :)

Thanks for the reply Mark. :)

I may do some searching on Google regarding the camera to see what else I can find regarding its spec.

Any one else know about the camera`s voice recording abilities? (Or for that matter the abilities of any similar cameras as I have seen a few `multi-purpose` models arrive on the market recently?)

Thanks!

RE: Medion 3 Megapixel digital camera - RECALL !!

HD462 (Elite) posted this on Friday, 17th December 2004, 16:28

Hi all,

Just got our evening paper and there`s a big advert in from Kwik Save recalling these cameras. It`s a bit vague as to what the fault is, just says possible intermittent fault with the camera.

I can`t see it being anything dangerous, it`s not as if it`s going to electrocute you or anything. I`ve just looked it up on the recalls page on the Trading Standards website, but that just has the same info as the advert (click here for info).

I don`t know what to do, I`m reluctant to take it back as I had a bit play with it when we got it, and all seemed to work ok, and I liked what it did (it`s for my son). If a fault does appear you still have your years guarantee, so could still take it back later I guess (with a print out of the recall notice, to say you`ve just found out about it ;) ).

Our camera might not even have the fault, it might be just random cameras, and we`ll lose a decent camera through it. What`s others going to do, take it back, or just see if anything happens later on?

A bit more info on what the fault is supposed to be wouldn`t have gone amiss. :/
