Hi Flyer,

As the premise of my site is to identify the best value for money amongst the sea of mobile offers available online I wouldn`t expect to see any of these handsets on my site for some time.

However, I`ve done a bit of research for you and it seems that the only handset that is currently available from the ones that you mention is the W880i - it is currently available for pre-order at E2Save & OSPS on O2 only and the cheapest minimum term cost is currently £480. (on O2 250 with a handset cost £120) - unless you have more money than sense and really have to have the latest handset as soon as it is released I would recommend waiting 3-6 months.

If you`re patient enough, you could save yourself in excess of £200 as the handset will eventually come down in price and possibly even begin to attract a certain level of cashback on lower-priced 12 month contracts.

I don`t get the chance to pass info your way as often as I would like these days as I`m just soooo busy desperately trying to keep my website up to date. However, whenever a major event happens in the cashback contracts arena I feel it`s worth putting some effort in to let you guys know about it...so here it is:

For a long while now, the zero cost contract mobile phone landscape has been a little stale, involving largely the same set of handsets coupled with various networks and tariffs. Well, it looks like everything`s about to change (and about time too!) as Phonebox Direct and Cool New Mobile launch the first salvo by releasing a whole new wave of zero cost deals on Vodafone with a wide range of mid- & high-end handsets never before seen at this price-point. This is by far the largest release of new handsets onto the zero cost scene in over 6 months.

If my gut instinct is right, this is bound to be followed by similar zero cost offers from other retailers, possibly on networks other than Vodafone, so watch this space.

E2Save and One Stop Phone Shop have decided to extend these offers until 9am on 27 December, no doubt in order to drive continued sales over the Christmas period.

Anyone thinking about taking the plunge should bear in mind that many of the handsets on offer are clearance handsets which, by their very nature, are in limited supply - In particular, I wouldn`t be surprised if the LG Chocolate and V3i sell out sooner rather than later.

E2Save and OSPS don`t compete much on 12 months free line rental offers these days (especially where high-end handsets are concerned). In particular, the last major offering of this type from either E2Save or OSPS was 3 months ago.

All orders placed from now until 27 December will be delivered on 28 December (subject to handset availability).

Hi Jon,

I don`t get as much spare time as I would like to keep up with the forum these days - the same goes for my old usenet haunts - simply maintaining the data on the website sucks all my spare time up and then some. Having relaunched the site about a year ago it`s been an uphill struggle trying to find time to automate some of the more time consuming and repetitive tasks to create some spare time for other, more interesting things...I`m slowly getting there!

Of course, the wee man in my life is also keeping me busy as he`s now a toddler and has an insatiable curiosity for things he shouldn`t touch.

Still, it`s nice to pop in once in a while and see some of the old faces (so to speak).

Hi Cruncher,

If we`re talking about OSPS then I can supply you with a PDF version of their cashback claims form. However, they specifically state that they will not accept copies. That said, the PDF form only exists because they`ve been sending it out to customers who have claimed that they didn`t receive their vouchers.

As I understand it they mark your account so that they know to exempt you from the "no copies" ruling - However, I have heard anecdotal evidence that suggests that PDF printouts have been accepted before for customers who haven`t previously notified OSPS of missing vouchers.

Email me via my site (URL below) and I`ll send you the PDF file in question by return of email. If you *still* can`t find your remaining original vouchers when the time comes it wouldn`t hurt to fill in the PDF version and send that instead.

Hi guys,

It`s been a while since I`ve been on here - I`ve been working like crazy at developing my website back-end further while continuing to manually edit the database contents. It`s become a real juggling act.

For anyone that is interested, the wee man has started to walk only in the last week or so, although his vocab is still limited to seemingly random single-syllable sounds.

Anyway...I felt that it was about time that I made an appearance to let everyone know that One Stop Phone Shop has changed their cashback schedules as of 31 October.

The old schedule was as follows:
(1) a small automatic payment after 3 months (optional)
(2) remainder in THREE parts, claimable after 4, 8 and 12 months.

The new schedule is as follows...

12 month deals (low cashback value):
(1) a small automatic payment after 3 months (optional)
(2) remainder in THREE parts, claimable after 6, 9 & 12 months.

12 month deals (the vast majority of them):
(1) a small automatic payment after 3 months (optional)
(2) remainder in FOUR parts, claimable after 6, 8, 10 & 12 months.

18 month deals:
(1) a small automatic payment after 3 months (optional)
(2) remainder in FIVE parts, claimable after 6, 9, 12, 15 & 18 months.

It seems that every man and his dog is slowly increasing the number of cashback payments to be claimed.

I have emailed someone inside E2Save to ask if they intend to follow suit - I`ll report back the results of that enquiry when I receive a response.

These changes should only affect new customers...if OSPS try and backdate the change (the cynic in me doesn`t want to rule this possibility out), feel free to get in touch with me. I`ll be only too happy to kick some butt to get your problem sorted (just as long as you have exhausted other avenues first).

No - I`m afraid that your best bet is to phone the customer services number on your bill and threaten to leave the network and take your number with you to see what you can get Three to offer you to stay with them.

Any upgrade through a third party store/website will only earn that outlet whatever the network offers them for upgrades which is often pitifully small compared with a new contract signup commission. For this reason, you will probably get the WORST deal going by doing it that way.

As for getting the best value out of Three you will need to give them a good story as to why a different network would suit your needs better than what they have to offer. I imagine that you can moan about the way that calls always get dropped when handing over from 3G to 2G which doesn`t happen on other networks. They will almost certainly tell you that this will soon be a thing of the past (as they will shortly be moving from O2 to Orange for their 2G coverage, with seamless handover one of the benefits of teh new arrangement) but you can simply tell them that if you are to continue to put up with the current status quo for any length of time until the changeover happens they will have to make it worth your while.

As for persuading Three that there are similarly good value tariffs available elsewhere that you could possibly be interested in moving to, I would mention either O2 (1000 xnet mins & 150 texts for £35/month) or T-Mobile`s FlexT 35 (900 minutes OR 1800 texts for £35/month). The T-Mobile deals in particular come with up to 12 months free line rental from some retailers at the moment, albeit with low-end handsets.

I should say at this point that you are unlikely to get a deal quite as good as the best new customer deals currently available by hardballing your service provider but, if you play your cards right, you could still get a reasonably good value deal (in terms of discounted line rental) with a free top-end handset. The BIG benefit of doing it this way, however, is that any discount that you secure will be directly applied to your bill with no need to jump through any hoops to claim it. In many ways, some people are prepared to pay extra for the simplicity and certainty of a network-applied discount.

Incidentally, in the context of the above scenario, a very good use for my site would be to simply use it to find an alternative deal to throw at your service provider as an example deal for them to match. However, I don`t currently cover packages on either of the abovementioned O2/T-Mobile tariffs at the moment. That said, I will soon be commencing coverage of a range of the cheapest FlexT deals currently available as I have more-or-less finished amending my search mechanism to properly account for the flexibility of these tariffs.

BA: Two cracking contract mobile deals with cashback AND a free PSP giga pack

Hi guys,

This is just a quick heads-up on two cracking deals that I really can`t believe are available - infact, I suspect that they will be extremely short-lived deals.

E2Save are currently offering two cracking deals on the 3 network, both with a free PSP Giga pack (currently worth about £185), where the overall cost to the customer (after the value of the cashback and the free gift is taken into account) is at or near zero. This is the first time ever that a package with a free gift has rivalled a straight cashback deal in terms of value and I dare say that they will sell out very fast once word gets around.

As an added bonus, it looks like E2Save will automatically send out the PSP Giga pack 28 days after the start of the contract so you won`t even have to submit a claim for it. That`s like getting a £185 cashback automatically after only one month...Fantastic!

RE: CANCELING A 02 CONTRACT (HOW?)

Hi,

If you want to be absolutely sure that your contract is cancelled I have a surefire method that will put your mind at rest. Request a PAC from the network and port your number onto a free PAYG SIM on a different network (there are plenty of them around).

By doing it that way, your old network/SP cannot justifiably claim that they never received your cancellation letter as the physical process of the port automatically ceases your old contract.

The only uncertainty is whether or not the network charges for a full 30 days from the PAC request in lieu of your notice, regardless of when the port actually occurs. Some networks do, some (apparently) don`t...but that`s a small price to pay for the certainty of closure and it`s certainly no more expensive than the cancellation letter route (where 30 days notice is required regardless of the network).

Okay...so the headline is a bit over-egged. However, suffice it to say that apart from my site, this is the only other place that I intend to post this information. It is certainly not something that has been noted yet by others but it won`t take long for parts of this post to be cut and pasted all over the internet and soon after that I imagine it will be "game over".

Before I begin, let me make an impassioned plea to all MSE and RPoints members on here who would be tempted to spread the word - out of deference to myself AND the DVD Reviewer forums, would you please do the decent thing and acknowledge this post and the DVD Reviewer forums as your source. A little common decency goes a long way.

Anyway, here goes...

Until recently, I always priced any Carphone Warehouse sourced O2 deal on the basis that the itemised billing was mandatory. This was because multiple sources inside the CPW organisation swore blind that it was. However, anecdotal evidence to the contrary soon began to build up (i.e. I had received a number of emails on this subject from readers of my site). It soon got to the point where I decided to confront my sources with the evidence and, sure enough, they capitulated and acknowledged that not only was itemised billing cancellable, it also doesn`t affect your cashback.

Okay, so maybe a number of you knew this already. However, in the face of conflicting info, I had to play it conservatively as I didn`t want to mislead the users of my site in such a way that they could end up losing their cashback entitlement.

Now for the clever bit...E2Save seem to be unique in that they actually include the cost of the itemsied billing in their stated cashback payments for all O2 deals. While I had mandatory itemised billing costed into my prices, this merely compensated for that. However, now that itemised billing is not costed into my prices, all their 12 month free deals are actually coming up at a cost of MINUS £12. This is NOT the case with their sister company, One Stop Phone Shop, who have never included itemised billing in their cashback amounts for ANY network.

Basically what this means is that if you cancel your itemsied billing (which is included by default) when you receive your O2 contract phone, E2Save will actually end up paying you £12 more than you have to pay the network over the term of your contract.

As I said earlier, as soon as this information hits the wider internet I imagine that E2Save will see a spate of itemised billing cancellations and this may be enough for them to reconsider their position. So, if you were tempted by any of E2Save`s better value O2 deals, now may be the time to act before they close the door on this little sweetener.

Yes...it is definitely a CPW thing because all O2 contracts sold via a CPW store are serviced by their own service provider, Carphone Warehouse Services. They, no doubt, have their own set of criteria when assessing your credit score.

All other places that you went to would have signed you up directly with O2.

BTW...before anyone asks...CPW Services handed their Vodafone customer base back to Vodafone last month so they only administer O2 contracts now.

For O2 and Vodafone purchases, to keep your number you must allow Phones2U to port your number for you at the time of purchase rather than deal with it after the event. Still for £32.87 (12 months itemised billing @ 99p and 1 Month`s tariff @ 20.99) it a very good deal for an unlocked W800i phone!


Just a minor point or two, but:

(a) the £20.99/month includes the 99p itemised billing charge, thus the final cost is only £31.88 (okay, so 99p isn`t really worth quibbling over).

(b) OSPS currently have a number of other interesting 12 month free deals on O2`s Leisure Time Plus tariff with refurbished handsets, including the Nokia 6111 (black or pink) and K750i. These deals, it claims, are only available until Monday. I strongly suspect that the recent hike in cashback offered with the refurbished W800i is also subject to similar time constraints. i.e. they all seem to be short-lived deals designed to keep the sales flowing over the weekend (they were only added to the OSPS site on Friday evening).

Anyway, if you`re interested, you`d better move fast and be prepared to be disappointed come Monday if it turns out that OSPS took more orders on these handsets than it could fulfill when they come to check their sales logs on Monday morning.

There is a way of keeping your number when resigning with the same network. Basically, you port your number onto a PAYG SIM on a different network and then a few weeks later request another PAC code from your PAYG network and pass this on to the network administering your new contract.

However, there is a big caveat with this...in some cases the network requires the PAC at the point of purchase (some O2 and Vodafone SPs are notorious for this) so you would have to live with your PAYG SIM for a while and wait for a good contract deal on your preferred network to come around. In this instance it would mean that you would have to accept that by the time you have your PAC and are ready to choose a new contract the current set of 12 month free deals may no longer be available.

HOWEVER, In the case of the Orange network, it is rumoured that they will accept a port in request any time up to 6 weeks into the contract. This was the case last time I asked (a while ago) so it is worth reconfirming this with them via your current contract customer services number rather than taking it as gospel. If this is indeed still the case you could purchase your choice of new contract (with new number) now while at the same time instigating your number port to PAYG on another network for your old number. By the time you`ve got around to rerequesting the PAC to port your number out of the PAYG and back to Orange you will still have time to pass the new PAC on to Orange to replace your new number.

In the meantime you will have to live with two numbers but, if you have two phones, you could just use your new Orange number for outgoing calls (against your free minute allowance) and only use the PAYG for taking incoming calls from friends/family/colleagues who can happily remain oblivious to your change in circumstances.

Complicated, I know...but it`s a solution nonetheless

Yes...given teh level of details that I go into on the site, the information has to manually and meticulously researched so I (currently) have no hope of managing a full spectrum of products, which could run into thousands of combinations of tariff+handset.

Basically, only 5% of the entire population of mobile deals out there are worth talking about anyway so I tend to concentrate my efforts on the value end of the market with sometimes a smattering of top-end handsets at particularly keen prices.

Clearly, after last month`s debacle with all the 12 months free clearance handsets (D600 included) the D600 deals this month on the new Orange tariffs weren`t all that great.

However, there is now a reasonable D600 clearance handset deal on Canary 30 (12 months) from OSPS which is advertised as 8 months at £1.99 (£136 over the year, after cashback). I have now added this deal to my database.

There is also an O2 250 clearance deal from CPW advertsied as 8 months at £0.99 (£160 over the year, after cashback and itemised billing are taken into account) - however, this is currently out of stock so I`m holding back on adding it to the database for now.

RE: Best Deal on Mobile Contract?

For the record, I would have to concur with the poster recommending the FlexT tariffs. While TMobile are offering 25% off the line rental for life for anyone purchasing direct from their website, I would suggest looking for the best specified handset that you can get for free (or nearly free).

P.S. for those who may be wondering, there are no FlexT deals currently listed on my site because I am currently wrestling with exactly how to integrate the flexibility that they offer into my search mechanism - infact, I may have to completely overhaul how I store, display and use tariff information as the new Orange tariffs now include combinations of multiple types of calltime. It`s probably about time for this anyway as I had never properly dealt with either/or tariff options such as e.g. the "either 100 text messages or 25 picture messages (or any combination in between where 4 text messages = 1 picture message)" offered by O2.

It`s impossible to say.

My gut instinct tells me that sales targets (where they exist) are probably assessed on a Monthly, rather than annual, basis anyway.

E2Save & OSPS had a huge blitz at the end of February/beginning of March and I would be surprised if they need to chase sales targets on Orange for that reason.

From a consumer perspective, the bottom line is that technology prices are always on a downward curve - if you wait 6 months you will always get it cheaper or, failing that, get something newer and better for the same price. I think the sensible way of looking at it is to set a price you want (that you realistically believe is achieveable within, say, the next 6-12 months) and purchasing when the item you are after reaches that price.
