BA: another Dell website error??? (FINAL DAY 18/07/05)

Reestit Mutton (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 17th July 2005, 10:12

Update (18/07/05): Today is the final day of Dell`s weekend money off promotion.

This "error" appeared early on Saturday morning and is available until 18 July (unless Dell notice and close the stable door before then). It is already plastered all over MSE and RPoints so I`m kind of surprised that it hasn`t yet been discussed here. Anyway here goes (in my own words)...

Basically, the deal is as follows...Buy any Dell Dimension Desktop or Inspiron Laptop worth more than £649 and Dell will award you with an additional £70 off the currently advertised price - this discount will show up at the checkout stage. Dell describes this offer on their website as follows:

Quote:

This weekend only, you can save an additional £70 inc VAT on selected Dimension desktop or Inspiron notebook worth over £649 inc VAT. Once you have placed your order, an additional £70 inc VAT will be discounted from your total price at the checkout.

For the avoidance of doubt, their small print for this offer highlights the following conditions (the words are theirs, the numbering is my own):

Quote:

(1) Special weekend money discount applies to single system orders only and is available on Dimension e-value codes starting with D07XXX and Inspiron e-value codes starting with N07XXX.

(2) Order value must exceed £649 after other promotions have been applied to qualify for the extra £70 weekend offer.

(3) Order value threshold of £649 must be reached in a single transaction to qualify for the extra £70 weekend offer.

(4) Discount of £70 is only applied once per transaction over £649.

(5) If any part of the order is cancelled after purchase which affects the total order value the extra £70 will be withdrawn.

However, it seems that their website doesn`t quite follow these rules.

Condition (1) is ignored: a £70 discount is awarded for multiple systems orders where the total basket value is more than £649, even if the individual systems are all priced below £649.

Condition (4) is ignored: TWO £70 discounts are awarded if you purchase a desktop and a notebook in the same order where the total basket value is more than £649, even if the individual systems are all priced below £649. i.e. it applies one discount for any desktops ordered and one discount for any notebooks ordered.

Additionally, your order doesn`t have to be exclusively made up of Dimension desktops and/or Inspiron laptops i.e. you can avail yourself of a very cheap notebook or desktop and purchase ANYTHING in addition to bring the basket total above the qualifying threshold of £649.

So get your skates on and place an order before either this offer ends or Dell amends their errant website behaviour. If you don`t need more than one system, why not club together with a friend, family member or work colleague in order to bring the order total above £649. Alternatively you could always use this promotion as it was intended and actually buy a single system worth more than £649 as there are some very good value high-end systems currently available on their site.

Below are some recommended buys for cheap (sub-£649) desktops and laptops to combine into a single purchase with an extra £140 off at the checkout:

Today is the final day of Dell`s weekend money off promotion.

I`ve also expanded on my post above to include full details and links for what I consider to be the best-value desktop and notebook buys currently available on the Dell website.

Additional money saving tip:

The discounts in this promotion are limited to one £70 reduction per order including a Dimension desktop and one £70 reduction per order including an Inspiron notebook. If you need to make a multiple system purchase*, why not split your order into a number of smaller orders containing a maximum of one desktop and one laptop each? That way, you could avail yourself of multiple discounts.

*PLEASE NOTE: I`m NOT condoning wholesale purchase for resale on ebay - however, there are many other good reasons for people requiring more than one desktop or laptop.

When I try for the PC for £234 it doesnt show the £70 discount so I guess you would need to order 2 or more to qualify for this price?

or that you tried to order it WHEN THE OFFER HAD ENDED?

Actually , it appears that the offer has been extended until tomorrow (20/07/05).
The reason you haven`t got the discount , beastman , is that as Reestit said the total order must be over £649 to get a £70 discount. The `trick` to getting the discount twice is when you order a laptop and a desktop together. With the total order value over £649 , the £70 is taken off of the desktop and the laptop (although the terms and conditions of the offer state that there should only be one £70 discount per transaction).
This still works as per Reestit`s example - I have just tried it (as far as getting everything in the basket) and it showed a price of £233.83 for the desktop and £350.37 for the laptop.
