Asda DVD Recorders £69

Apologies if this has been posted before...

Asda in Cwmbran have the PYE and the Cyberhome DVD recorders for £68.94 each. That`s the cheapest i`ve seen DVD Recorders so far, I assume it`s the same price in all stores.

The Cyberhome 1600 is awful. Mine died after a few days. Even when it worked it would never record properly. Couldn`t get a single disc to read back on my PC. I wouldn`t have one for 20quid.

I replaced it with the Pye PRV645, which is actually a Philips 610 with a different front. Same spec though, and the Philips 610 region hack works a treat. I`ve had my Pye for a few months now (paid 100quid for mine - ouch!) and it`s been good. No 1 hour recording mode though, but it does have a 2.5 hour mode as well as a 2, 3, 4, and 8 hour mode. Sound records in Dolby Digital 2.0 in all modes, much better than the usual MPEG sound you get on the cheapo recorders. It has a fan, but mine makes very little noise. For 69quid I`d have one no hesitation.

I have the Cyberhome, and have had no problems at all. (I must have just been lucky). It also plays DIVX format discs.

Its a bit hit and miss with this recorder. Some run quite hot (no fan) and after a time that distorts the recording. On the plus side they take both DVD+ and DVD- discs (DVD+RW and DVD-RW too). The recording times can also be a bit akward eg 114mins instead of 2 hours, 170 minutes insteasd of 3 hours. Finally there is a simple multi region hack available from the handset.

does the PYE play DIVX? that would be ideal for me, i just want a recorder for backing up my sky+ and possibly playing my DIVX lost!

No, no DivX on the Pye. It`s just a Philips 610, so if you find the spec for that on the net somewhere you`ll have the spec for the Pye as well.
