HMV Shops a rip off compared to HMV Online?

Nads (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 2nd September 2001, 03:58

I went into my local HMV (I say local but its a mission and a half job) in Leicester and noticed that all the DVDs seemed to be priced at 17.99 or 19.99. Thats odd because I did noticed a few dvds such as U571, Austin Powers and Little Nicky (see dicanio`s thread) for 9.99!... WTF!
Just be aware of stupid HMV!

What dicanio was reporting was what is known in the trade as a "loss leader" - generally these are very limited quantities of ridiculously priced bargains to entice you to the sale.

I wouldn`t say that HMV Online are any better or worse than the shops - just try asking the thousands of people who tried to order the X Files Season 1 box set online for £30 a few months back - they only had TEN in stock. Similarly, there were many tales of people queuing up for hours outside the shops to grab the same item only to find that they had all been sold or reserved already.

To give HMV their due, all those who complained about the X Files fiasco got a free £10 voucher, which was a great gesture, and probably unnecessary. Their online service is better than most (usually get anything you order within 48 hours if it`s in stock), but it`s just a shame about their prices when they don`t have a sale on.

I`d say stuff HMV up where the sun don`t shine...The other day, the first day of the sale, I spent three hours and many attempts trying to purchase 2 copies of U-571 for a total of £9.99 no success, would not accept my password.... An hour later I had another go and got through straight away password accepted immediately. So I ordered 2 copies to find out the price had gone up to £19.99.Hmmm! Very fishy HMV .You rip off merchants should give us a decent sale and not one with DVD`s that have had the price bumped up just so they look good in a Buy 1 get 1 free offer..JackAsses... www.Play247.com seem quite good though , now that I`ve calmed down...the bummers didn`t even reply to my email- was a bit of a moody one...

I`d say the website was more expensive than the shop, i find the prices are the same or more, plus theres the postage factor.

Play247, DVDPopcorn and EzyDVD are by far better.

Ah yeah, but in Iceland they chuck in a pudding too, Globe, usually an apple pie or a cheesecake.

Morrisons, my arse...

Iceland rule - free delivery if you spend over £25 too, which I always do (due to excessive BOGOFs in my basket)
