Page 1 of Nikon D40 DSLR Incl.18-55mm lens under £320 delivered.

Hello,

I`ve just taken the DSLR plunge and think I have got a good price on this entry level camera.

I had the D50 (I think) before I switched to my Canon EOS300D.
I bought it for £400 from Jessops as it went clearance...apart from a focussing fault it was a s*** hot wee camera!

The Canon does a damned good job too though but have to say I did like my Nikon.
And remember your first EXTRA purchase before you start snapping everywhere is to get a UV filter for the lens. Not to enhance the pictures in any way, just to prevent lens damage if you knock it!
(I got mine on Ebay for under a fiver....much cheaper than a £100 to replace the lens)

Polarising filters are handy to have to if you do landscapes or reflective surfaces.
(again, same guy on Ebay, under a fiver lol)

They`re threaded to the end of the lens.
I think the Nikon is a 58mm screw mount but a simple ring to Jessops can confirm. If it`s 58mm then *all* 58mm circular screw on filters will fit it.
Don`t get it from Jessops though, I`ve had these filters checked by someone who really knows their stuff and he said they were absolutely fine and take some good balanced pictures.

If you want me to send you the details of the Ebayer I bought them from, lemme know. It`s the usual "filter is a £1 and postage is £4.99" pish though, I bought the two filters and got a whopping £1 discount on the postage but at the end of the day, I knew why he priced it thus and I got them both for less than 1 used in a jessops branch!

(Was also about to buy the Sigma APO zoom macro lens from a guy in HK until I read the general forums! lololol)

A lot of people had purchased the Nikon D40 then got mad, because a D40X, then D50 came out very shortly afterwards. £320 is good price for it. A few places have it for about £349 + delivery.
DPReview. This is also a good Digital Camera site for tips and help on camera issues.

I`d recommend you register your camera on the Nikon web site and check you`ve got the most up to date firmware. If not, you can download and install easily enough yourself.

Yes, the D40x seems the perfect option for first timer DSLR people, but it was just too much more money for me (over £400 body only).
I thought the D50 was the predecessor to the D40 though...I may be wrong... :/

Correct, the D50 predates the D40. Regarding the D40X, I have only read reviews which are not very enthusiastic. Yes it is a good camera, but poor value, someone in marketing went chasing pixel count rather than VFM. With the D40 I think you have a good camera at a good price.

I am just surprised that someone hasn`t jumped in to tell you that you should have bought a Panasonic :D :D :D

I thought the D50 was the older one too, hence I put the "I think" on my comment.

The D80 is a good piece of kit too.
During my "research" into the sub-£500 D-SLR market when I bought mine I found that the Canon and Nikon models really won every category.

Seems to be dependant on the features you want and the one you prefer the feel of when holding it but I liked the menu setup of the Nikon.
Canon seemed to take slightly better balanced pictures and the Nikon was a little easier to use.

Nikon menu is very good. At the time of looking Nikon D80 (for me) had the edge over Canon (Rebel), also got lots of free kit thrown in at time of purchase. However, as mentioned earlier all down to personal preference.

I Find myself sometimes struggling with problems on exposure :D , seems I`m not alone though, even on auto dial mode.

At times I really miss my Fujifinepix point and shoot, until I see the quality of the D80 photos/printouts and know I made right choice to go to DSLR :)

I`m sure you`ll have great fun and enjoy clicking away on your D40.
