HELP PLEASE!! Can some kind soul `in-the-know` tell me how to split audio tracks from a DVD
I have recently been given a music CD containing numerous A Capellas on it (just the singer`s vocals) that were created by `extracting` the various vocal channels from a Music Video DVD. I am wanting to know how to do this, but haven`t a clue where to start! I am assuming a piece of software is required on my computer to seperate all 6 channels (is it 6 channels?) - thus giving me a breakdown of the song such as vocals, drums, percussion etc all as sepearet tracks (which is exactly what I want). A fear of mine is that this is only possible by buying a £2000 DVD system that has output for each sound channel on it (maybe something like this doesn`t even exist!?!?). Anyway, I know that this `extraction` and splitting of the sound channels is possible - I just need to know how it is done now! Any help with the would be GREATLY appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

I know that you can strip out .ac3 audio from DVD .vob files using DVD2AVI or Smartripper - you`ll need a DVD-ROM drive at least

Thanks Clayts. I have an Apple Macintosh. Are the programs (or others that do the same job) available for Mac? Thanks :-)

I use DVDX where you can just encode the audio with no video and get an AVI file out.
As for compatibility with MAC, can`t help you there as I never have to worry about it. Sorry mate.
You might wanna check some sites where you can download those progs and see what they say.

Rather than start a new thread i might aswell ask my questions as its kind of related. Does anyone know if and how i can seperate the music and the lyrics of a song. Say have U2 lyrics on a Beatle song, this isnt what i want to do but just an example.
cheers

AFAIK that`s not possible. The audio and video on a DVD are different streams( that`s why u can listen to the audio commentary while wtching the same film). As for music, I take it u are talking about CDs. The lyric and music are on the same stream, so no possible separation. I guess it kinda works if u have a hi-fi or other player that has a Karaoke function and u could record the music withut the lyric. But to be honest none of my players has that function so I dunno if it works.

your specific example of splitting the Beatles is often an easy one. Alot of their stuff recorded at the birth of stereo was split laeft and right. so you`ll hear drums on the left with guitar. bass and vocals to the right. v. interesting to listen to. just try it, you`ll be surprised how many of their tracks are done like this.
The other way is - as someone else suggested - have a karaoke function. in reverse. a karaoke button on a home stereo will normally just rip out the center of a stereo mix, so you are left with only instruments/music panned off center. because vocal/lead uitar etc are nrmally centre in a modern mix it will exclude these. I`m sure you could do that in reverse and cut out any instrument s set to left and right and be left with a vocal track in the centre. it`s not going to be clean though. you`ll get bleed from the stereo tracks.
The other way to do it is with eq, just cut all eq`s hat don`t affect the vocal. you will be left with vocal plus other stuff in that frequency range. then just add the rest of your backing to diguise the bleed on this vocal.
