What DVD distributors guarantee quality in picture and sound?
Personally, I feel Momentum are the best, but I would like to hear other responses.
RE: What DVD distributors guarantee quality in picture and sound?
I think Columbia Tristar are good too, maybe the best.
FOX
MGM (exceptThelma and Louise and lets forget the T1 and SOTL rotting)
EIV(not the packaging but most high profile releases like ALI)
Universal too can make nice transfers (maybe because Columbia helped them out until now)
Awful are the discs from: TARTAN lots of grain s*** sound (the terrorist) and everything else in stereo only.
I will update my list later on can`t think of anything else.

Is it just me or are all Anchor bay region 2`s a bit or even a lot on the soft side picture quality wise.
Turning your brightness down so far and contrast up helps but they all seem to be a little lacking.Especially shows up on a video projecotor.
My wosrt one yet was the recent Flying deuces " SPECIAL EDITION"!!!!!!! Laurel and Hardy and it was so bad I sent it back to play for a refund saying it wasn`t fit to be on DVD as about 3 times worse than my VHS and that was bad enough.they kindly obliged.
Rita sue and Bob Too was also a dissapointment from Cinema Club as most of theirs seem super.
There are others and worst case is getting a dvd and you just know instead of doing a proper transfer they`ve used the old VHS master AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!
Personally I often find many region one`s a bit on the grainy or soft side too.
I think all distributers slip up with the odd copy and sometimes you do get some really nice surprises like Ring of bright Water was lovely unexpectedly.
Its all a game of chance.
I often wonder why they go on about new blue laser disks being better than current DVD when they often only half bother on the current type. Why can`t they all be like gladiator??? especially if a new release.
PS does anyone know of a source in the Uk for strange and eerie 30`s and 40`s B+W horror films please. Best Mark.

I think Columbia are the best at picture, but sound is variable. Fox and Momentum have some blistering DTS soundtracks, but so do Columbia. I hate EIV`s covers, but they do give good transfers.
I have Hard Boiled Uncut and the picture is atrocious. Better than the earlier release but still badly damaged. The original print is obviously buggered.

Unfortunately this is due to them doing NTSC to PAL conversions from their US discs rather than using a proper PAL master on some of their releses. I noticed it with House, Haloween (tv edit I think) and Nosferatu. Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue doesn`t have this problem but is *very* dark in places. Anchor Bay US discs are usually very good so I hope their UK branch gets the quality up.
