Band of Brothers - What a load of tosh!

Jim Morrison (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 2nd April 2003, 14:04

I, after hearing so many good reviews was on the verge of shelling out for the BOB DTS Box Set. When I saw it was coming to UK Gold, I thought I`d wait and see how good it was.

And am I glad I waited - it`s the most ridiculous thing I`ve ever seen. The soldiers just seem to shoot aimlessly with no tactics and some of the so called special effects were embarrising, liek when people were supposed to have fallen from parachuting and it`s so obvious they`ve fallen off a big bean bag.

What a disappointment

Did you like Saving Private Ryan?

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, no matter how wrong it is ;-)

I did like Saving Private Ryan, but there was a plot to the movie, and you knew what the hoel point was. It wasn`t just aimless!

I don`t like it really either. Thought the effects were fine tho. Fed up with the heroic Americaness of the whole series tho. Only time the Brits appear is if we are being saved in a mission or the occasional stereotype `cock-er-ney` who`s dialogue consists of "Cor blimey theses Yanks, eh? They`re aving a tin bath. Roll out the barrel!" etc etc.....

Missing the point here. Band of Brothers is about an elite American unit (Easy Company) and their role in WWII and it therefore tells their story, so what you are seeing on screen although made more dramatic essentially happened for real. It did not set out to chart the involvement of everyone in the war, just Easy Company and it does this very well. This is a fantastic series that gets better and better on each viewing.

Spielberg still manages to fit in his weird anti British element IMO

If you read the Stephen Ambrose book, which is taken directly from accounts of people who were there at the time, you will reailse that many of the events in Band of Brothers took place and there are few made up stories in the series. Because of the wealth of information avaialble to Ambrose and what Easy Company actually did during WW2 very little dramatisation was needed.

In Ambroses` other books he praises the British (and other allies) roles in the war and writes very balanced accounts. Obviously B of B is very American biased as it follows an American unit. I think the problem people have with American tellings of the war is the fact that we now have chips on our shoulders because of the many Hollywood travesties that have been made re-telling historical events and putting an American spin on them.

I think Mr. Morrison is just pig sick jealous he missed out on BoB for £15.If he`d managed to get one he would be singing it`s praises.
IMHO.
