Page 1 of Varying picture quality from disk to disk, any answers ?

Hi,

I am new comer to DVD. I have had my LG 3200e for three weeks. Its connected to a 32" RGB Tv.

However, I remain puzzled as to why the quality of some films differ from others. Some films appear razor sharp , ie - Gladiator , MI2, whilst others such as Seven ( first issue) , Fight Club, wedding singer and some others appear poorer.

Is there a difference in how the film studios press a film ?

I am getting paranoid about my player. You know, poor pic compared to others but as I said before on other disks it looks pie hot...

Any opinions from experience ?

Same with CDs, Video, Records, or any other format theres always gonna be differences, the answer why? some companys dont give a toss about quality!

Why cant all transfers be as clear and crisp as say Mission Impossibles or Blades. I too was suprised by the low quality tranfer of Fight club, which seemed grainy and dark, expecially after the high marks it recieved picture wise.
I think it all boils down too which company is making the disc. Prime example, look at the great job columbia Tristar made with JAWS ( which came out in 75 I believe) and compare it too warner brothers release of blade runner for example, which came out alot later.

I think how old the film is also contributes to the picture quality. If its a regular film, it will take a lot of work and effort and time and money to make it 2001 quality but some companies do take the time to do this for classics such as T2 ultimate edition. The picture in that dvd is so clear and crisp you would think that it was only made last night. Disc compression and other factors also affect the quality.

Yeah the video quality on some discs is kinda screwy. For example, Alien (R2) has a noticably better transfer than Aliens (R2), even though the first film was quite a bit older.

Damn those corporate pigs...........

I thought Fight Club (R1) had a pretty damn nice transfer really.

Well, l read a lot of directors interviews who say they often try to make their film look "grainy" lts mostly the newer directors who are experimenting with this look. MATRIX, FIGHT CLUB, THREE KINGS were all made to look this way. Sir Steven also done it this way for SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.

Of course a lot of others are just put on dvd any old way and film companies are not that bothered. l heard WARNER BROS. have been using crappy transferrs on their 12.99 range.

Warner Bros`s £13 and £16 range sucks -as well as a s***e box you generally get no features worth talking about and a crap transfer.

Even their full price range could do with a better transfer on some films(green mile).In the uk we get screwed by warner brothers-compare their r2 and r1 releases.

There is a distinct difference between making a film look grainy to give it atmosphere and a s***e transfer.

But that is the world of r2 dvd.

so do r1 transfers usally come out better than r2. i know this is a hard commparison to make, but im only after opinions??

Thanks for some interesting points people. It appears that a lot of die hard DVD`ers always plum for region one as they sound better disks on paper...are we being audio/video philes and worrying to much or are people after value for money ?

Going back to my first post on this subject, Last week I bought
The Lost Boys and Interview with the vampire - both £9.99 @ PC World.
The Lost Boys looks really really good - this suprised me, whilst Interview WTV looks ropey..so there are picture differences even in the same range. The only other thing I can mention is that The Crow looks s***e on my LG3200e but on my brothers Smasung 511, it looks like a different movie........so, back to the old hard ware debate eh chaps ????

l got a R1 copy of INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE the "enhanced version" which have a very sharp picture. (On a personal note, my twin cousins audtioned for the role of the sleeping twins which Lestat was going to eat. but didnt get the role.)l tend to keep away from the first wave of dvds that arrived as they picture often lacks and extras don`t exist!
