Page 1 of MAGNOLIA....AGONY OR WHAT ?
DVDs & Films Forum
My best mate purchased the Magnolia Double DVD and raved on about it for weeks, he said it was a thinkers film and I would love it, even though it was 3 hours long !
So he lent it me and i watched it on Sunday, and ...............................jesus ! It was agony, am i to believe that the sole point of this film was that each of the many characters were all going through a dilemma simultainiously! WAS THAT THE POINT ?
Unless anyone can enlighten me, I must say that was the biggest pile of poo I have ever, ever seen. Any comments ?
What is the point of any film?
Well I thought Magnolia absolutely kicked ass really, I did not notice the 3 hour length at all. I felt quite refreshed after the 3 hours actually, I didn`t find it boring or anything.
If you didn`t like it thats fair enough, but I thought it was the best film without any real plot I have ever watched.
Aye.
RE: MAGNOLIA....AGONY OR WHAT ?
I quite liked it until the silly ending ruined the whole thing. Why frogs?, why though?. The acting was good but if all films ended with baffling, "symbolic" garbage like this, I`d wouldn`t bother to watch them.
RE: MAGNOLIA....AGONY OR WHAT ?
I thought it was a good film(Even if the story does jump about a bit!)
And on the flipside I thought it was one of the best films I`ve ever seen. But there you go - nobody is right and nobody is wrong.
Does a film have to be told in a linear fashion or have a `point`? I took the major theme of Magnolia to be redemption.
RE: MAGNOLIA....AGONY OR WHAT ?
The film was recommended to me by a friend. It was one of the worst films I`ve seen this year. The fact that it was three hours long was a joke, couldn`t the BBFC have saved us from this one!

The same thing happened to me.
I saw Magnolia and thought it was fantastic. Bought the double DVD and soundtrack the next day. Left the film to a friend an dhe thanked me wholeheatedly for wasting 3 hours of his life. (He then lent me GO and said that this is what interweaving stories should be like - I then bought that too!)
It just shows that everyone has different tastes and thank God for that.
I think Magnolia is a real masterpiece, Tom Cruise is superb. Go is quite a good film as well, a little bit more mainstream but enjoyable all the same.
Cheers,
I watched this film yesterday and I completely agree with jaxon, this film is utter crap. I can`t believe I wasted 3 hours of my life watching it, though it felt like 3 days! The first 3 minutes was good (am I using the number 3 too often?) and it went down hill from there - rapidly! It`s sooo slow and pointless, the dialogue is very boring and after about 2 hours of agonizing bordem I was very tempted to just turn it off and return it to the rental store, but I sat it out till the end not that it made any difference.
I find it very interesting though how some people can love it while others hate it - I guess it`s like marmite!

I actually thought that `Magnolia` was the best film I`d seen in a long, long time. I missed it at the flicks but my best mate went on and on about it for months. I bought the DVD when it came out and was blown away by it. Technically it is ridiculously good. The majority of directors in Hollywood couldn`t even contemplate making a movie of this magnitude and this PT Anderson guy is going to be a god in years to come.
The DVD also includes the best documentary I`ve seen on the format. Its almost worth buying just for that.
Incidentally, I saw the DVD in HMV yesterday in the sale for something like £12.99.
American Beauty was in there as well - brilliant film.
