Know any good Anime DVDs?

floyd_dylan (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 3rd July 2004, 21:26

Whilst watching Ichi the Killer anime, I felt like I`ve been out of touch with the anime side of things, so I was wondering if anyone can recommend me any cool kick ass dvds?

I`ve got the usual suspects, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Urotsukidoji, and Perfect Blue, so basically I`m really into Sci-Fi, Action/Adventure, and Horror.

I know Miyazaki Hayao films are supposed to be very good, but like Disney, and any other kiddie related movie cartoons, I`m not really in to them (unless it`s Battle of the Planets, or Transformers 8) ).

What about Spirited Away? Not really sci-fi / horror / action ... more fantasy based, but a great film nonetheless. Actually I go one further and say just watch this film and be astounded.

*crack knuckles* here goes...
1) Grand space opera - Macross (a whole series or get the movie "Macross: Do you remember love?" - very good).
2) Kickass dogfight - Macross Plus (movie & OAV as they`re quite different; get the boxset)
3) Sword, Samurai - Rurouni Kenshin (series is really funny, the OAVs (Trust & Betrayal) are really sober and very beautiful (and really KICKS ASS) but I recommend starting with the series)
4) Spiderman The New Animated Series is pretty good if you like Spiderman. (I just watched the whole season 1 over Friday/Saturday)
5) Ninja Scroll (?? doesn`t seem to be in your list)

No I don`t have Ninja Scroll, but I have heard it`s very good. I tell you what I am after, and thats Guyver (no not the Mark Hamill one), I can`t seem to find them anywhere on DVD!!!

Wonderful Days sound cool (13 billion to make??? How much is that in £s???)
Escaflowne the Movie, is that all the episodes condensed down in to a movie, or is that seperate anime all on its own?

I might try Spirited Away, but not sure if it`s going to be a kiddie type flick.

I was once conned in to getting an anime, that I never heard of, but it was highly recommended, by loads of Amazon reviewers which was Sailor Moon S, it was soon shown the door, after I picked my jaw off the floor.

Also what`s OAV?

From anime encyclopedia:

Short for Original Animated Video (OAV), or sometimes Original Video Animation (OVA), refers to an animated feature that was produced specifically for the home video market, bypassing broadcast, cable and theatrical releases.

Well, definitely recommend Macross Plus and Rurouni Kenshin. Search the web, plenty of fan websites out there to tell you what it might be like. (also, if you look hard enough, probably available to download to "preview")

cowboy bebop is good. you can only get the movie on R2, the series is only available on import.....neon genesis evangelion is also worth checking out. and if giant robots are your thing, then you should definitely seek out the patlabor 1+2 boxset.....two great films.

Spirited Away is well worth the look.

I`d also recommend:
Ninja Scroll (must have)
Wicked City
Cyber City Oedo 808 (Three films, box set - all bad-ass!)
Tokyo Godfathers
Fist of The North Star (ultra violent)
Streetfighter II: Animated Movie

excellent, I shall take note of all those, and put them on my DVDs to get list, I won`t be able to get them all, cos I don`t think I`ll have another good wage, as I did last month, but I shall get them all eventually.
