Disney - just plain greedy!!!

Moo.. (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 27th March 2001, 10:33

i went into my local shopping centre (the trafford centre) yesterday to see how much lady and the tramp 2 was, as our kid wants it for his birthday.
i was horrified to see the prices this dvd was being sold for. most places wanted 20 quid plus for it and hmv even wanted £23!!!!!! F*****g discraceful. its not even a two discs set!

i hope this isnt a ``worrying new trend`.....

If your bro` doesn`t mind VHS, MVC have a Disney offer on at the moment - 2 for £22.

This includes Lady and the Tramp 2, Dinosaur... infact, it includes every Disney title.

Even though I don`t buy VHS myself anymore; I was tempted.

cheers. ill mention that!

another thing. whats the point of releasing two versions of dinosaur? i could understand it if the standard release was around £12.99 but to charge £2 less for it than the collectors edition is bloody stupid!!! im sure most people will think it makes more sense paying the extra couple of quid for a second disc packed full of extras.

as i said - just plain greed!!!!!!

Don`t get me started on Di$ney. Their contempt for their customers is quite staggering. Take the Toy Story Box Set - BuenaFista (Di$ney`s distribution arm) have washed their hands of the whole matter, claiming it`s down to customers` cheapo DVD players, not their wonderful, high quality disk that`s at fault. Most of their damn disks have operating glitches because they only test the disks on top-end Sony-type machines. I had hoped the fiasco over the R1 Dinosaur and The Kid disks would sort them out (don`t pee on your own territory), but they`re trying to shaft the American public with the same argument about machines.

Grrrr.

l agree, Disney have always charged that few pounds more for their videos so the same trick continues with their DVD`s. And l bigger price difference between standard and collectors edition would help

But l just can`t hold a grudge against them since l went to Disneyword! l loved it!

Never had the opportunity to go to Di$neyworld (no kids for the excuse, no money for the opportunity - but would love to go). Mind you, you just have to get the atmosphere of the Di$ney shop to understand the company has magic. Expensive magic, but magic nonetheless.

Disney the best Animators...Sony the best DVD makers so who else should Disney test there disc`s on ......the cheepo silly named players that come and go, it would be years before anything would get released.

And remember your childrens, children will still be watching the likes of Toy Story when we are all dust!

Expensive......well the best always is!

The point is, bear, there is a "standard" associated with DVD, and both player manufacturers and studios should stick to it.

To their credit, Sony and other manufacturers have actually taken the trouble to go *beyond* this standard, in order to catch any dodgy non-standard discs that come out (like the Toy Story one). However, they shouldn`t *have* to do this - studios should do their bit too, to make sure that their discs are okay on *standard* players.

Also, it`s the "cheepo silly named players" - particularly the ones which can be hacked for multi-region - that have made the DVD format as popular as it is! You don`t think everyone has £300 plus to spend on a chipped Sony, do you? Budget manufacturers like Samsung must take the credit for breaking that magic £200 barrier, making DVD a far more attractive proposition to the average punter than was the case when the only option was a £300-£400 Sony or Panasonic.

And I do love the Toy Story films, as it happens - I just don`t have much respect for Disney as a company, or their crap excuses for DVDs :-)

I agree with Mike. Just because Disney can`t be arsed to program their discs correctly, LOTS of customers are disappointed. Are you going to tell me that they can`t afford to run proper testing?

No. You can`t. So Disney`s QA just sucks.

I have over 100 movies, from varying regions and the only disc I have had a problem on is the Dinosaur Special Edition.

So your argument that Disney is the best is incorrect, when in fact very many companies are doing the job very well indeed, Disney once again shafts the customers. The man at Tesco`s said that there were 80 returns in the first 2 days of selling the title, and there is a list of 14 players which it will not work correctly on, from many different manufacturers.

Also, talking about Sony being the best - can you say The Matrix??? Cause you still can`t watch it on a lot of Sony models.

Kindly keep your $ony/Di$ney pimpage to yourself, bear. It`s nearsighted and ill advised. Disney make millions by rehashing vague bland animated morality plays, releasing very poor live action films films and cashing in on prior glories (Lady & the Tramp 2!!!!!!). They just have a lot of money to sugar coat the crap, and force it down kids necks with advertising.

Look to Don Bluth for brilliant animation. Japan has some of the most refreshingly stylistic animation in the world. Disney is the easy listening of the movie world.

This is all my opinion - I don`t expect you to like it or adopt it.

I also don`t expect to be looked down apon because I didn`t choose a Sony player and I expect to get what I paid for from Disney.

Dreb.
