Wonder if you buffs can help me

I have my Xmas money and like to buy lots of Independant films and one`s not very well known but are good and have pretty much bought all the one`s I personally know of so am looking for some recommendations.

I particulary like Foreigns films (Subtitled) and one`s made outside of Hollywood but am open to any suggestions.

Basically, it`s a `What films have you seen that aren`t very well known would you highly recommend to others` type list.

========

Thanks all

My top 20 subtitled films!

I watched a film called The Road Home from Zhang Yimou (Hero, House Of Flying Daggers) the other day and loved it. It`s quite slow and very touching, plus it has Zhang Ziyi, which makes it essential IMO.

Depends what you want.

There are a lot of subtitled movies that are the equivalent of coffee table books - nice to look at and have the appearance of being `arty` but are really pretty lightweight - things like House of Flying Daggers, Hero, Koyaanasquatsi, etc.

Then there are the subtitled movies that are the true classics. Titles like:

Regle du Jeu
Belle et la Bete
Tokyo Story
Seven Samurai

Don`t be deterred by the `arthouse` label applied to some of these Some are heavy going, others aren`t.

I`d suggest two possible avenues forward. First, have a look at the British FIlm Institute`s page (http://www.bfi.org.uk/). Its magazine, Sight and Sound, conducts a poll of the world`s most important directors and film critics every ten years, and the list of `greatest films ever` is generally taken as the yardstick of what is worth seeing.

Second, try sampling some of the titles from the Criterion collection (http://www.criterionco.com/asp/) who have the best concentration of classic movies of any company. At full price they`re expensive, but I`ve found CDWow to be just about the cheapest place for them. Sometimes you can get lucky on ebay, but most of the time, some moron will end up putting in a higher bid than retail.

I have enjoyed the Marcel Pagnol films Jean de Florette and Manon de Source and the two about his childhood My Mother`s Castle and My Father`s Glory.
Urga is a good Mongolian film about a herdsman lured by the city lights.
Breaking the Waves is a nuts film u won`t forget in a hurry. It`s a love it or hate it effort.
Other foreign ones I`ve watched and enjoyed recently are Vukovar,Before the Rain,Meditteraneo,Run Lola Run, Hard Boiled (great action film) and the odd one by Werner Herzog,The Ox (unbelievably downbeat Bergmann thingie),The Vanishing (original Dutch version of the shoddy Hollywood job),Vacas (nuts Spanish film about cows), Das Boot and Cinema Paradiso
I got the Miyazaki box set and was slightly dissapointed by the mostly weird fantasy stories.

Whatever u do avoid watching Kolya. This is one of the most highly regarded East European films but is stereotype central.Appallingly dreary.
Pool is the game of the Gods.
