RE: Cheap Trip Too London!!

Hey MicoMan,

I`d suggest that you go online and apply for an Oyster card. Even if it`s only for a couple of days, it`ll work out a lot cheaper than buying travel cards. And you can then hope on and off of buses and tubes without worrying about buying tickets.

Oh, and I`d highly reccomend the Tate Modern on the South Bank. It`s fabulous (and awful, depending on which gallery you`re in and your personal tastes) and it`s free!

Have good time.

RE: Free Jeep Off-Road Experience

Yep, there was some near Redhill, just Sarf of London, which I was going to go for, but then delayed and when I finally got around to it that location was booked up.
Still, a good excuse to visit the folks back in Bris`.

RE: Free Jeep Off-Road Experience

Dear lord I hope not, I`ll be going to the Bristol one on 20th May.
And I don`t intend spending any money.

RE: Idiot in upper flat has his washing machine on all night & morning....!!

Ugh, bloomin` sodding noisy people that live in the flat above....Andy_R, I share you pain.

The guy upstairs to me and the missus has his wee 3or 4 year old daughter staying with him half the time and she`s regularly up, running about, jumping up and down and bouncing stuff on the floor at 7am. And on two occasions we`ve been woken up around 5.30am, that`s bolt upright with a big bang overhead.

I had to smile with all the advice of talking to the offender and that`s always got to be the first thing you try but some people just won`t listen.

The guy above has just split up with his wife, his eldest girl is living with the mum but the little one stays with him most of the time and I just think he`s having a bit of a melt down, as you just can`t talk to him. At least that`s me giving him the benfit of the doubt.....maybe he`s just a total c**t.

It should be simple shouldn`t it....you raise the issue with them, saying you appreciate his situation but can he just prevent his daughter raising hell in the room above our bedroom, but every time we wearily ask him to please keep it down it ends up in him running down to the top of the stairs and telling us to f**k off.

An informal letter to him resulted in a letter to us suggesting that we were infringing his human rights by asking him to be quiet. He`s an artistic soul, bless.

Still, the threat to keep him awake by banging on his ceiling every night around 3am seemed to work, touch wood, as I haven`t been woken up in the last couple of weeks. :D

Idiots only seem to respond to idiotic behaivour or threats. :/

RE: Jet - Shine On - Awesome

What was the single?

Used to listen to Xfm a fair bit but the heavy rotation did my head in and I turned off the radio and slapped the MP3 player in.

RE: This is irritating me,.....

"Absolutely, but as I said above if that is what he wants to do then he needs to be upfront about it and explain what he did and why he regrets it"

In an understanding world, that would be fine.
Alas, if he did that, he`d lose a big slice of votes, as there`s a lot of people in this country that don`t understand the `drugs` issue and talking about one`s experiences, however insignificant, will only form negative opinions in some people`s minds.

It`s for this reason that I`m sure many of us on here have never mentioned to our parents everything we`ve ever got up to.

As others have pointed out, I think the issue now is someone`s right to privacy and the understanding that people`s views and actions change over a number of years.....and fair play to the polititians for taking this stance.
Cor, it`s not often I say that. :/

RE: Guess what I`ve just heard?

Think yourself lucky that you haven`t got two muppets in a white van cruising past your office every other day, blowing their `horses neigh` horn at every available oppurtunity. (:¦

"What annoys people is the hypocritical side of it - saying young people (and a few older people Happy ) shouldn`t take drugs while he himself did so."

Do you not think that people that have experience on a subject are actually more entitled and better placed to give their views than those that have merely formed their opinions on what other people have said?

I`ve rather be told a film is awful by someone who has watched it, rather than someone that has just jumped on a bandwagon of disgust. For example.

Many people have done things in the past that, with the benefit of their later wisdom and experience, they don`t think was the best thing to do and surely these people need to be listened to?

J.

P.s. Fair play to John Reid who, on being questioned about the whole affair, refused to condemn Cameron and swiftly moved the questioning away from the issue....back to the hooha of his failing department.

RE: John Peel`s (auto) biog - Margrave of the Marshes

admars, I know just the part you`re referring to when you say it`s shocking.
It certainly shocked me.....although he seemed to just shrug the incident off.

He`s left a big hole in the airwaves.

Actually, a mate now runs a monthly `Keep your Ears Peeled` night in Camden, playing the best of his 80`s Feastive Fifties....which is a bit of a plug, my apoligies.

Jet - Shine On - Awesome

Got this new Jet album a few weeks ago and it`s hardly been out of my ears.

It`s not often I call an album `great` but I think I`ll still be spinning this little gem in my dotage.

You can almost see the ven diagram, with the best of Oasis in one circle, late Beatles in another, with early AC/DC in the final circle, and this album sat in the middle.

It`s not groundbreaking, it`ll not revolutionise anything but it`s just very, very good song writing and musicianship. I heartily reccomend. :D

RE: Confession of Pain- (New Tony Leung film?)

Watched 2046 last night....an amazing looking film, a real flip side to `In the Mood for Love`.

Although I think `In the Mood for Love` was a tighter film.

Well you can hardly pick a better day for it.
Anyone out on Valentines night, without a partner in tow, is likely to be available....so dive in and good luck. ;)

J.

RE: What do you think of Valentines day? Doing anything special?

Ahhhh Valentines Day....another time for lots of kids to get totally depressed at not getting a card, again, this year, maybe they will next year, noone fancies them, waaaaaaaaaaaaaa. :(

Still, on those years that you DID get a card....what a feeling !! :D

I actually quite like Valentines day, for the single folk only mind.

When I was single, it was a great excuse to head out for a night out with mates and the perfect excuse to strike up a conversation with likewise obviously `single saddos` of the opposite sex and see where it took you.

Course, when you`re with someone, it`s pretty much just another day of the week....especially when the missus` birthday is the very next day.

RE: I assume you motorists have signed this

From pg 24 of the Times on 11th Jan:

Quote:
"A Downing Street experiment in internet democracy has been hijacked by a hardline motoring organisation that is promoting a petition against nationwide congestion charging.

The Associate of British Drivers, which believes that speed limits should be advisory rather than compulsory and campaigns for the abolition of speed cameras, has used the No 10 website to secure more than 200,000 signatures.
...
It claims that the Goverment is planning to force drivers to spend up to £200 on a tracking device that will monitor all their movements, charge them £89 a month in road tolls and catch them every time they exceed the speed limit.

It also claims that "all drivers will be paying far more than today".

The Government... has made no decision on the national scheme which it says is at least a decade away.

A study by the Department of Transport found that most drivers would pay less than they do now under a national system of road tolls...

The technology may also cost the motorist nothing because the DfT hpe to "piggyback" on technology being fitted to many modern cars, such as satellite navigation systems.

The Government has never suggested that the charging system would be used to monitor the speed of vehicles.

A DfT spokesman said " This email is misleading and factually incorrect. No decisions have been made on many of the things it claims are government policy".

Apparently.

RE: Eddie Murphy "Delirious" trivia question

Well that`s a lovely response isn`t it?

Cheers dkuk, I`ve been waiting to watch this again for a while, it`s a lot better than `Raw` iirc.

RE: Free Creative Docking Station

Ahhh, not *quite* true.

This offer only actually applies to those that have purchased a ZEN Vision:M or a ZEN V Plus.

So if you`ve bought any other Creative product, you`re outta luck. :(

RE: £5 Secret Santa Present...

Did ours last week. Although it was lucky dip, one for Boys, other for girls.

Put some thought into it and got a Magic 8 Ball for my fiver.
My mate next to me pulled out that, he was well pleased.

And what did I get given.....a mug, featuring a puppy and kitten in the style of `Forever Friends`, with a bag of friggin Revels in it.

What dumb stoopid b*tch thought that would be a good idea to give to the `boys` lucky dip I do not do.

Bah.

RE: Sick Days

Always an interesting topic this one and I can see both sides, having been a manager of a Customer Service team.

It was a close knit team but a couple of idiots took the p*ss by taking sickies....one guy took 34 sick days off in a year.....with 32 being single days off. That is shocking.

The annoying thing is that it really does impact staff morale if it`s in a team situation and those remaining have to take up the slack.
BUT, one point I always used to hear was "They take sickies all the time and nothing ever happens to them, so why shouldn`t I?"

The thing is, OF COURSE something is happening to these people, but their peers just can`t actually see any evidence of it. Gone are the days when you can sack someone for taking sickies, it`s very shakey ground to do anything but support someone that`s taking sick days off, even if you know that they aren`t.
So companies have got to beaver away behind the scenes, go through offical disciplinary processes and go through the motions. It`s very frustrating.
Now, management are hardly going to announce ongoing disciplinaries in team meetings and likewise, if someone`s taking the p*ss, they`re unlikely to give the impression to the rest of the team that they`re actually close to the sack. As I say...frustrating!

Whereas in reality, they`re ineligible for any pay rises for 2 years, ineligible to move job within the business for 2 years, having to go through various Occupational Health sessions and are one wrong word from being out the door.

So I guess the answer in most big companies is, Yes, people do play the system and take sickies more than they should but these people are not going to get on as much as those dedicated workers that come in every day and do a good job.

So next time you feel anamosety to a slacker co worker, bare in mind that you`re probably earning more than them, are more likely to get a pay rise/promoted and when you more on, will get a good reference (as opposed to having one refused, which doesn`t look good). Which I hope makes you feel better.

RE: EU Blocks internet Booze / Fags

"Cost didn`t stop me drinking when I was a kid, it only changed what I was drinking."

Heh, this is true. But Spar`s special Dutch Export was only 35p a can. :p
So not really expensive (unlike fags, when a packet would`ve wiped my entire week`s pocket money).
And besides, spending a quid on a 2 litre bottle of cider in the company of others my result in a bit of a snog with that special girl you`ve had your eye on for the last schoolyear.
It invariably didn`t but you`ll try anything when you`re a kid. :D
Again and again and again and.....*sigh*

J.

RE: EU Blocks internet Booze / Fags

Quote:
Just thought I would lay this myth to rest..... Cheap fags do not open the flood gates to youth getting fags, young people will always try something there not supposed to have, its part of growing up.

Well that`s true in some respects. Kids will always try things that are put in front of them, as will teenagers, as will pretty much any other age group that fancies trying something new.
But....once they`re tried it, cost DOES come into it when you want some more.
If it`s cheap, why not, if you have to think about it leaving you short of cash, maybe leave it. If the kids can go and buy a packet of fags today, whereby they could only afford to buy a single cigerette yesterday, I think they`re a wee bit more likely to continue smoking into adulthood.

Cocaine use hasn`t gone through the roof in the last dacade due to it suddenly becoming `cool`, it`s because in the last 10 years the cost has fallen through the floor and anyone with £50 of a friday night can treat them and their friends to the joys of constantly sniffing and loudly talking b*llocks all night.

Because let`s be fair, until you`re actually addicted, be it to fags, booze, cocaine, gambling or buying DVDs, cost is a big limiter on how often you indulge.

I remember going into school the day after that and taking the p*ss out of a friend who was an Iron Maiden fan.

RE: EU Blocks internet Booze / Fags

"A £4-00 bottle of wine in the UK is probably .50p to £1-00 in Spain & France"

Not in my experience it isn`t. You *can* get bottles for that price, but you wouldn`t want to drink them. :p
I my experience you`d have to pay about £2.50 - £3 to get a really nice bottle.

All the talk of `Rip off Britain` is rubbish in a lot of areas. You go to France, Spain and other areas of Europe and you`re amazed at the cheapness of some things, but perhaps don`t notice how expensive other products are.
All countries have got to balance their books, they give with one hand and take away from another (and fritter a large proportion away on administration in the process).

Go to France and try to set up a new business, recoil at the huge costs involved and the high taxes on top and perhaps you might realise that being able to buy a really nice bottle of wine for a couple of quid less than the UK, maybe isn`t the best deal. :(

Now...UK property prices on the other hand...rant rant rant.....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

J.

RE: EU Blocks internet Booze / Fags

Am I alone in thinking that this result was actually the best outcome?

Fags are not good for you, cost the NHS millions and are blooming expensive.
This seems fair to me.
Making them available cheaply isn`t going to help people quit and will just make them more availble to kids. I`d rather this didn`t happen.

As for booze, this ruling wouldn`t have cut prices in the pubs, bars and clubs, it would`ve just made it a bit cheaper for us all to get it delivered to our homes. And considering you can get a cheap bottle of wine from the supermarket for three or four quid, and a damn good bottle of wine for a fiver, I can`t see that booze is a huge expense for the average UK drinker.

This ruling however, had it gone through, would`ve left a massive whole in the UK`s tax budget, which would`ve needed to come from somewhere else. Somewhere that no doubt we`d all have had to pay for, regardless of our social drunkeness.
It would of course also have pushed our local off licences a little closer to the brink of bankcrupsy, leaving the huge supermarket chains to clean up fully, thus impacting the economy further.

For the record, I get through a hellofalotta wine each week and tend to gravitate towards the fag machine on the odd drunken night out, so I`m not merely whining that I`d end up paying for all those party animals, as this ruling would`ve allowed me to make a rather big saving over the year. I just think that this country`s economy doesn`t need more money sucked out of it leaving the tax payer to stump up even more dosh.

I`ve said me bit, flame away. :D

RE: Jeff Waynes War of the Worlds CD under 3 quid

Now THAT, is a bargain. Have it on CD already but for that price, for the Special Edition, I think I might.

Cheers Pat.

RE: All Killer, no filler...?

Aye, they were a highlight at a wet and soggy Glastonbury.

Not impressed with the single either but should be getting the new album through the door at some point today, so I`ll give it a few spins and see what I think.

For Sale: Monty Python`s Spamalot - 2 tickets for Thursday (12th Oct)

Through some cruel twist of fate....I bought these tickets in July and then got a gig the same bloomin` night....I`m having to pass on my pair of tickets to the new Monty Python show `Spamalot`. This makes me sad.

Amazingly, I can`t find a taker at work, which has surprised me, so I thought I`d try here. I know it`s short notice but I`ll be in the West End on Thursday evening and can meet whoever wants them outside the theatre at 7pm and hand over the tickets for cash, like wot we civalised folk used to do in the old days before the evil spector of Ebay loomed large. The details are:

Show: `Monty Python`s Spamalot`
Date/Time: Thurs 12th October / 20.00 start
Venue: Palace Theatre, Shaftsbury Avenue
Seats: Balcony - Row F, Seats 10 & 11 (right in the centre)
Cost: Face value - £45 for the pair

Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions, I`m here all day...try the fish. Cheers,

RE: Mission Impossible 3 better than the first two installments??

Quote:
The general feeling here is that MI:3 is indeed the best of the bunch so stick that in your pipe and smoke it...!!

That`s only because all us right minded people saw the Heading and fell off our chair laughing.
I`ve never walked out of the cinema midway through a film but would`ve done with MI:3, if we weren`t there with a wee lad we were taking to see it.
Oh, and he fell asleep half way through !! (:¦

Mission Impossible? Well, the first action scene was `Mission Fairly Easy`, the second one just about lived up to the billing but the third, crowning glory of the missions was so damned impossible to film, they thought it best to skip the whole thing and just have a nice chase and fight scene instead.

What a bunch of kaka.
