Sin City.......what a nasty thing this is.

Snookums (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 25th June 2005, 00:00

I`ve just watched this film and for the first time in my 33 years I feel sickened by a movie.
The level of violence and downright mean-spiritness is unbelievable.Presumably the `comic book` tag prevents this from getting a triple X certificate?

I am genuinely sad that this is accepted now as a mainstream film to go and see at the cinema with a few friends?

Can someone explain the attraction and purpose of a movie such as this glorifying killing so much?
This has totally knocked me off-kilter with the world. When I was 18 this kind of thing was unseen and unheard of in the mainstream.

The gangs of hoodies and chavs on the street corners are going to be watching this kind of porn?
I`m speechless......can someone explain this level of sadism as everyday entertainment?

I am upset by this.I have no interest in a world where this is considered the norm.

Fair enough I suppose - everyone`s entitled to their opinion, but Sin City is by no means the most violent or "evil" film out there. It`s all about the style, and in terms of the art direction, sound design, music, writing and acting it`s a masterpiece. If you focus on the violence you won`t get anything from it, especially since most of the gore is actually pretty tame.

That`s what we call progress! :D

Progress! Give me Indiana Jones,Back to the Future,E.T,Ghostbusters etc any day. :D .I thought aged 15 that when the Nazi`s opened the box in Indiana Jones was scarey enough. Now you can see adverts with people`s heads being ripped off.......hurrah for modern society.
I`m just glad I don`t have to spend my formative years watching this dross. As I`m sure you already know better than I......it`s not usually showing the actual gore that is the scarey bit.
I have a gentle soul from the early eighties which was a pretty innocent time for kids.
There is virtually no innocence after the age of 3 now......I don`t envy the current generation that at all.
If you get enjoyment from people being eaten alive by wolves etc so be it.

I thought it was okay, but a bit light in the character development, but apparently there`s an extended edition coming out, which is supposed to flesh out (no pun intended) the characters, so I`ll be waiting for that to come out.

I love those movies from the 80s, but Sin City is probably the only violent movie to come out so far in the past two years, as many of the films nowadays that are supposed to be action packed or of horror nature have all been a lame PG-13.

Ok.....cheers for the comments.I`m sure there are a load of more sick films out there......but I`ve never seen one touted as `a summer blockbuster` to be anywhere near as nasty as this.I have no doubt that in a couple of years this will be the norm and days of Jaws being the scariest thing around have long gone.Flloyd......you`re signature reminds me that not so long ago Scarface was the ultimate in movie violence. This film makes that look like a Heartbeat episode.
The only other film I`ve seen as nasty as this one was The Talented Mr Ripley in which u were supposed to feel sorry for a character devoid of any good morals.
It`s just in Sin City the nastiness is unrelenting and there seems no difference between the supposed good guys and bad guy behaviour. It seems to say as long as you give yourself a reason u can do any dispicable act to any person u choose. This can only bring on hatred.

It`s a great film. I`m actually glad they didn`t wimp out with translating the violence to the big screen. It makes it easier to watch, because it isn`t supposed to be in a `real` world. I`m glad for one, that we`ve actually got a decent violent flick for a change, because studios have been forcing directors to tone down films more and more over recent years in order to reach a wider audience?

Snookum - are you female? I don`t mean it in an offensive way, but it`s not the type of film that many girls will enjoy anyway; it appears to be squarely aimed at a male audience. ;)

Apologies if this sounds flippant, but you went to an 18 certificate film called `Sin City`.

Did you think it was going to be full of fluffy bunnies feeding each other chocolate?

Yes......fluffy bunnies feeding chocolate with their arm stumps.I heard it was based on a comic.......so I expected Dennis to be performing amusing japes with his dog Gnasher. :B

I put it to the assembled jury...that it may not be a man/woman thing as Ben alluded to but an age thing.Has anyone pledging support for this been over 30? For any Big Brother fans I shall call it the Derek/Roberto syndrome :D

Noticed the news recently ?
You`ll find that there is much worse violence going on around the world involving the murder rape and mutilation of men women and children and that they occur in countries that continue to trade with and receive support from various western countries including the UK.
At the moment the Home office still believes it can send asylum seekers back to Zimbabwe while the foreign office seems to think its a hot bed of torture and brutality.
In Burma the military dictatorship continues to brutalise the nation and UK companies continue to trade with them with very little interference from the UK government.
When the genocide was being committed in Rwanda we sat back and did nothing and told the UN commander not to act while he watched people being slaughtered in the streets.
Time to look beyond the comfort of your front room and realise that a lot of the world is still a brutal place and there are much worse things than hoodies and chavs.
