Mission: Impossible 3

I love the first one, it`s just non-stop movement and plot dependent... there aren`t any real characters but it`s all so glossy and OTT and busy that it`s 100 minutes of pure cinematic fun. The second one is a rubbish film, but I like it due to some of the performaces (Dougray Scott and Richard Roxburgh are hilarious)... and the action is pretty great if extremely staged and artificial.

So we come to M:I-3. First off, to anyone that watches Alias, this film is just a $150m 2 hour episode of that with Tom Cruise instead of Jennifer Garner. It`s big, it`s silly and it`s a hell of a lot of fun. Great opening "There`s an explosive charge in your head". Wow, Philip Seymore Hoffman is one bad dude in this film, although a bit underused. Simon Pegg is great and hopefully this leads him to more parts in American films (my current must-see film is Hot Fuzz :D ).

But yeah, apart from a few bits that are slightly too silly at trying to be suspensful, M:I-3 is one hell of a blockbuster. It`s more or less non-stop action once it gets going, hopping about the world. JJ Abrams is a capable director, but what he lacks in visual flair (maybe one too many close-ups) he makes up for in his choice of set design, costumes and characters and even structure which is straight out of Alias.

Tom Cruise is Cruise. You either dig him or not. I do. Ving Rhames is much better in this film too, a proper side character and not Cruise`s bitch like in the first sequel (although not a developed character by any means, no deep stuff here).

Doubt it, maybe as a baddie, or a traitor, or the only useless British idiot in a team of well groomed Americans.

I agree with that. This movie is definetly Alias: The Movie right down to the use of fun codenames and chitter chatter on the radio whilst on dangerous missions. Simon Pegg is Marshall Flinkman in disguise. There is a pointless appearance by Greg Grunberg in the beginning. Yeah JJ probably just chucked him in there just because he could. If anything his presence adds to the fact the viewer feels like they are watching alias. JJ abrams has also made Giachinno (sp?) use the same music used in alias/lost. This is most evident in the climax SPOILER:
(Where julia is trying to revive ethan)

Although good fun i am a bit dissapointed as I was expecting something different from abrams, something we havent seen before. As it goes, this is by no means a crap film, worth a watch on dvd atleast.

Watched this last night and really liked it, much better than I expected. The only disappointing part for me was the soundtrack, I preferred the rockier stuff and theme from number 2. Otherwise kept me on the edge of my seat, great story, cast and acting (Fishburne was great imo)

i was disappointed. i wanted to like it a lot, (and when you hear that tune, you can`t help but lower your defences) but even though it`s full of sobbing and screaming and running around, there`s still no emotional investment whatsoever, it ends up being another expensive hollywood picture with lots of crap going orange in very noisy surround sound.

as a certified, and probably certifiable `alias` nut, i wasn`t impressed by what jj brought to the table. pegg`s cameo is stupid and displacing, jj thinking, presumably, that he could repeat the fabulous bit of business he did with ricky gervais in `alias` but with nothing to back it up. it`s also woefully predictable from a man who has made a career out of mind-bending twists. there are blatant attempts to craft an ensemble piece out of this tom cruise show, but they are crass at best: maggie q and johnathan rhys myers nattering about prayers in an suv has to be the dubious highlight of attempting to invest a 2 hour movie with the character dynamics he`s honed in tv... better luck next medium.

the opening does work, proving what we all knew already, that hoffman can do anything convincingly. and the vatican spy game is a gleefully confident spoof of the genre`s inherent silliness and also the attraction of its suspense. trouble is, even at its best, the film only reminds you of how great `alias` is and how widely, and expensively, he`s missed the mark.

Mike, a bit off topic this, but I`m currently watching Alias Season 3 (just seen the Ricky Gervais episode so about mid season) and finding it difficult to get through. I loved the first two seasons, but this 3rd season feels tired, none of the twists have any impact and the story and setup is downright uninteresting. I think they made a huge mistake at the end of Season 2, the "shock" ending clearly a sign that JJ Abrams original idea had run it`s course. My question to you Mike, is it worth watching Season 4 and 5?

Cheers :)

You know what you`re going to get with a Mission Impossible film: explosions, chases, gadgets and implausibly ridiculous set-ups; M:I III has all of them and is probably the best of the three (I was ok, II was rubbish) and, as has been said, the Alias fingerprints are all over it.

I don`t particularly care for big action blockbusters but didn`t hate this and that`s probably the best compliment I can give it as Cruise didn`t completely get on my tits until the final reel and PSH out acted everyone he came into contact with and was obviously having the time of his life as a pantomime villain.

I just wish John Woo would get a chance to release his director`s cut of Mission: Impossible II, it must of been some story for it to clock up to 3hrs.
