Couple of questions about buying region 1 dvds
Hi there, I believe that for r1 dvds that cost over £18 you have to pay to get them through customs and was wondering how much would I have to pay for one that that was £24.99 from playusa.com and would the dvd be delivered to my house or would I have to pick it up from the post office. Thanks.
RE: Couple of questions about buying region 1 dvds
If a customs charge is added to the delivery, then the extra monies due would have to be paid on receipt of the package, wether it`s at your door or if you pick it up at the sorting office

I have ordered quite a few R1 box-sets/complete series that are £20-£30 (or dearer), and it seems to be pot luck whether they charge you or not. I think I`ve been pretty lucky - on average I would say I only get charged about once in every 4 or 5 deliveries... :)

Have a look on amazon.co.uk new and used there are quite a few companies who do them cheaper such as CaimanUSA and DVDlegacy.
Also try deep discount who do a whole range of dvds real cheap.

I find £18+ items clearly marked as such from places like PLAYUSA always have customs charges.
Whats worse is that the Post Office charge £4 collection fee before anything else is added.
Postmen don`t collect cash anymore so collection is normally from your local P.O.
Depending on how much the item is,an Amazon Marketplace Seller is probably your best bet as these often come through packaged like person to person items and customs normally skip what looks like a non business purchase.
But check out the many sites and you will be surprised at how cheap some are.
A £24.99 item from PLAYUSA is likely to set you back a further £8 altogether.
I never use them for £18+ items anymore as I found I had a 100% failure rate when it came to skipping customs.
Movietyme are often cheaper than PLAY and usually no more than a couple of pounds dearer and they are customs friendly,so no extra charges

Is it true that if you ask the R1 retailer to mark the package as something then you don`t have to pay custom charges?

I don`t know whether I have just been extremely fortunate, but 90% of the time, I`m not charged... :)

I understand that Movietyme post from the UK so doesn`t get hit by customs could be wrong though, (not sure if it`s only for newer things but I ordered the Lost season 1 boxset the week before it come out on a Wednesday afternoon and received it by the Friday)

The large scale retailers won`t tick "gift" as it is effectively fraud.
However, some of the US/Canadian based retailers have been known to put a false value on their packages so they skip customs.
Just shop around.
Some sellers are good for one type of thing while another will be good for something else.
If you want to get the cheapest price everytime you will need to spend some time searching out different retailers and be prepared to use a range of them

Just order from either Movietyme, Axel Music, Loaded247 or CDWow and you wont have to worry about customs as they either post from inside the UK/EU or pre-pay the duty.
