In announcement news today, Image Entertainment has revealed a new Caligula: Four-Disc Imperial Edition DVD for release on 10/2 (SRP $39.99).

The set will include both the uncensored and unrated theatrical cut, as well as a pre-release version containing more never-before-seen footage.

Extras will also be extensive, including audio commentary with Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren, a new interview with director Tinto Brass, 2 versions of the Making of Caligula documentary, hours of deleted and alternate footage, the soundtrack on CD, Gore Vidal`s screenplay on DVD-ROM and much more.

In all honesty for all the derision it got, and still gets because it was funded by Playboy. I thought this was a true account of what the Roman Empire was really like in all their depravity. Okay so the plot wasn`t as good as it could of been, but it did show the Romans to be sick, perverse, and barbaric.

Also, what else could possibly be in the uncensored version, that they didn`t show in the unrated version?

unrated version - Softcore
unrated version - hardcore

Is it creepy that I know that?

eh? The softcore version was released on DVD and was R rated, and at the same time the hardcore version was released unrated.

Also in the set there is a pre-release version with even more footage!!!

I remember a few years back I was going to use this film in my dissertation on film censorship. FilmFour or somesuch showed the longest legal version in the UK (2 hours I think), then I watched the R1 DVD with the complete uncut version (2 1/2 hours?) including all the hardcore stuff. Bizarre doesn`t even begin to describe it!

Oddly enough, I think of the two I preferred the shorter version. While I can see the reason for including it - the decadence of the Roman Empire during that period - it just seemed too extreme. And if I`d wanted to crank one out I`d rather Peter O`Toole didn`t keep popping up onscreen...

Can`t quite see how it warrants 4 discs! Still, each to their own.

It was McDowells performance in `if` that got him the part of Alex in clockwork orange
Kubrik saw the smug look on McDowells face as he walked into the gym and thought he would make a perfect Alex
