Best films of 2007? Top 10?

chewie (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 1st January 2008, 23:24

Surprised nobody has posted this yet!

I`ve not really got time to think up 10 in order, but some of the best films I`ve seen this year are (in no particular order):

The Fountain (probably still the best, despite being released last January).
Into the Wild
Stardust
The Bourne Ultimatum
Zodiac
Eastern Promises
Hot Fuzz
Curse of the Golden Flower
Ratatouille
Sunshine
The Darjeeling Limited
Black Book

I enjoyed a lot of the big blockbusters and sequels and other fun flicks this year such as Transformers, Die Hard 4, Pirates 3, 28 Weeks Later, Shoot em Up,

Also a couple of films I liked but thought they could have been better such as Atonement (masterful setup, first 2 thirds are great, but ending doesn`t work on film, probably did in the book though). American Gangster (good film, but I`d have rather seen the last 10 minutes replace about half the existing film as that`s where all the interesting stuff takes place!). This is England was also good, but a little heavy handed at times.

I`ve probably forgotten loads but these are the ones still in memory. Still really want to see Assassination of Jesse James... but haven`t had the time just yet! Actually quite a few films I still need to see!

28 Weeks Later
Knocked Up
Superbad
This Is England
Rocky Balboa
The Bourne Ultimatum
The Kingdom
Sunshine
The Last King Of Scotland
Zodiac

I may edit this list as I`ve done it off the top of my head.

Plus I have taken this as my favourite films/films I`ve enjoyed the most, rather than the actual technically best films of 2007.

This is why I vote on imdb each film I see so i can work out films of the year :)

Hot Fuzz
Transformers
The Simpsons
The Darjeeling Limited
Knocked Up
28 Weeks Later
Hairspray
Harry Potter OotP
Saw 4
Spiderman 3

most of those I gave 8/10, so I agree a good year, but nothing outstanding. Hot Fuzz was my only 10. Spiderman and Saw 4 I both gave 7, along with many other films, such as Hostel 2, PotC, Bourne

Fountain was one of my worst films of the year 5/10, same as Golden Compass :)

You gave Bourne Ultimatum the same review score as Saw 4 and Hostel 2!? :o

yeh, as much as I like shaky cam in an episode of the Shield when a perp is being chased down a street, I got annoyed with the fact that Bourne had 2 camera men.

1 was sat 20 miles away using a zoom lens. the other was in between any actors having an epileptic fit so you couldn`t work out what was going on.

If it hadn`t been for that I would have enjoyed it more, and scored it higher. Bourne 3 did seem v overrated to me, I thought the weakest of the 3. 1 being the best.

Hostel 2 and Saw 4 were more of the same, good fun gory thriller/horror films, so I enjoyed them :)

The Bourne Ultimatum
No Country for Old Men
In the Shadow of the Moon
Billy vs Steve - King of Kong
Superbad
Eastern Promises
Rocky Balboa
Knocked Up
This is England
Planet Terror

Other stuff I really liked includes Control, Before the Devil Knows You`re Dead, The Bucket List, Day Zero, Hatchet, This is England, 3:10 to Yuma, Death Proof and The Lookout.

There`s loads I`ve probably forgotten too...

looking at other ppl`s top 10s, and mentions, I guess this is the problem not being a pro film reviewer. I`ve seen several films mentioned I wanted to see, but didn`t get time/round to it, or thought I`d enjoy other films more.

3:10 to Yuma, Death Proof, Planet Terror, Eastern Promises, The Kingdom, American Gangster, Jesse James, Ratatouille, Stardust, Rocky were all on my to do list.

Saying that Hairspray (remake) I only watched `cos i was on a flight, and missus was watching it, hadn`t seen original, but thoroughly enjoyed it.

Who is a pro film reviewer on here?

I`ve missed a lot of films partly because I`ve been extremely busy, about 5 years ago I could see anything between 150 and 200 films in the cinema for the year, now I`ll be lucky if my average is much more than 1 a week.

I noticed there are films listed here not yet out in this country, naughty naughty! ;)

Seriously though, I`ve had to resort to naughty tactics to see some films, but I will buy them on DVD (but only because they were good! :p ).

sorry, didn`t explain that clearly. What I meant is that we choose to see films based on our expectations, so we generally go to see films expecting to like them, but sadly somestimes get disappointed, where as a pro will watch all sorts, and will therefore see some films that he great he/she didn`t know about.

I think what I meant is that our top 10s don`t necessarily reflect on how many good films came out, just show the faves of those we got to see.

I think on average I go to the cinema about once a month. I`ve just been looking at some of my imdb ratings, which include films I scored after seeing DVD, rather than at cinema, so previous years top 10s could be v different.

My intention is always to list my favourites. I know "Best" seems like some sort of definitive accolade, but looking here there aren`t films on these lists that aren`t mainstream! Yes, I`m betting very few people saw In the Shadow of the Moon, but thats more because it didn`t get a wide release (I missed this too because it was only on a limited showing I couldn`t make, I can`t wait to get the DVD). These are just opinions, and its always good to share as someone might have seen a little gem that maybe only got shown at a film festival.

A best of list couldn`t realistically be done by one person in a year as there are, I`m sure, some good films out there that really only played in a few theatres, numbering single or double digits.
