I guess Warner wasn`t impressed with Singer`s Superman effort, that they`re thinking of giving the franchise another reboot.

In June 2008, Mark Millar claimed to have approached Warner Bros. on restarting the franchise, hoping for a 2011 release.

A very well-known American action director asked Millar to "team up with he and his producer to make a pitch".

In July 2008, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. were listening to various screenwriters to pitch their solutions for a second installment.

Singer was still attached, while busy with post-production on Valkyrie. Comic book writers Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns, Mark Waid and Brad Meltzer also pitched their ideas for a reboot.

Morrison stated, "I told them, it's not that bad. Just treat Superman Returns as the Ang Lee Hulk." Waid said "The Incredible Hulk has proven the audience will forgive you and let you redo the franchise." Morrison`s idea was similar to his work on All Star Superman, while Waid`s was akin to Superman: Birthright.

In August 2008, Warner Bros. officially decided to reboot the film series.

Studio executive Jeff Robinov plans to have the film released either by 2010 or 2011, explaining "Superman Returns didn`t quite work as a film in the way that we wanted it to. It didn`t position the character the way he needed to be positioned.

Had Superman worked in 2006, we would have had a movie for Christmas of this year or 2009. Now the plan is just to reintroduce Superman without regard to a Batman and Superman movie at all."

They should have started over again as opposed to releasing `Superman Returns`!! I`d have prefered a complete remake of the Superman franchise instead of releasing a film where the audience is supposed to realise that it was a sequel to Superman II (The version directed by Richard Lester and not Richard Donner) and to accept that Superman III and IV never happened!?! How is a 6 year old lad supposed to embrace that??

This planned trilogy would be great! Imagine a re-imagining of Krypton with todays special effects. Bring back General Zod and we are already half way there!!

Wasn`t there something over at the AICN about Warners` plans for their Superhero franchises? Apparently they have great plans, but Harry and the gang hope they won`t listen to the Wall Street Journal hack who broke the news who is fixated on the "dark side" of superheroes.

Dark and gritty may work for the Bat, but it isn`t nessecelery the right way to go for Supie, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and the rest.

Oh, and for the record I`m actually dreading The Spirit which looks to have feck all to do with the Will Eisner comic.

I read this a while ago. It`s a load of bollocks. There`s nothing wrong with carrying on from SR as long as they do what BS said they would do - deliver more action. What`s the point setting up a whole new universe and then starting again. They`ll probably bring in a famous actor to play SM this time, which will ruin it. Routh was really good in the role and deserves another chance. Whatever happens, that f***witt John Peters shoudn`t be involved. I don`t want a giant spider in the third act.

The Incredible Hulk reboot has a lot to answer for.

The can`t make the next Superman film any darker, because Superman Returns had it`s dark and broody moments throughout the film.

Spacey`s Luthor was a lot more nastier than Hackman`s, as well as Superman feeling out of step with the rest of the world, and those close to him.

The might ask Edward Norton to don the suit.

Yet more proof that the current output from Hollywood is in a creative funk.....Superman Returns was a good film, and as such doesnt need to be ignored and restarted. Im bloody sick of remakes and rehashes of old ideas....where has all the originality gone??

They should have given Singer another chance. I think Superman Returns has been unfairly shat on, even if it did have it`s problems.

Question is, will they keep Brandon Routh in the role? I doubt it very much.

I agree with Ben, I liked Superman Returns and thought Routh made a good Man of Steel. Quote:

Leave the dark and gritty for the Batman franchise and keep the Superman stuff a little lighter.

I dont think it was unfairly shat on at all. A 2 odd hour cover version is just such a wasted opportunity.

I know its not all about the CGI, but with modern effects they could have made it absolutely spectacular, rather than concentrating on making Superman a home wrecking, emo dick face.

I loved the superman film except for the actress playing Lois Lane. Go the Dark Knight route
1.Change an actress
2. Now you`ve set up the world - again- concentrate on story and action
3. Get rid of the OTT stuff that costs money but doesnt add to the story - like all those Plasma screens in a newspaper room, or that stupid railtrack
