The Invention Of Lying...

Miles (Elite Donator) posted this on Monday, 5th October 2009, 11:35

I saw this last night at the cinema and I`m telling the truth when I say it`s pretty dire.

Gervais gives the relatively usual `David Brent` performance, but with one scene showing a sincere and compassionate side I didn`t think he was capable of delivering in his performances.

On the whole it was pretty bad and one long product placement movie, so I wouldn`t recommend it to anyone.

I thought it had a few amusing moments. The Coke/Pepsi gags were funny, I liked the whole `Jesus` thing, and there were quite a few decent throwaway lines. As you say, not one for the ages, but it was funnier than a lot of comedies I`ve seen this year.

Thought that bedside scene was genuinely touching as well. My Mrs even cried.

For me the amusing moments were too few to make it a decent movie.

However, what I did find amusing was:
SPOILER:
The obvious point that religion was essentially based on a lie. Being an atheist I actually quite enjoyed the portrayal of that...(am I a bad person for that? :D)

You won`t have anything to worry about even if you are. Or will you? ;)

I saw that Gervais was in it and it was billed as a comedy

I immediately gave up on it being either funny or watchable

(and I liked him when he did the 11 O`Clock show!!)

First ever film walked out on tonight.

Really, really didn`t like this film.

Walked out at the bit when he decides to
SPOILER:

invent religion and Jennifer Garner told him how many people it would make happy.

I may have stayed until the end but the girl I was with, was desperate to leave and when i told here there was probably about 40mins left, she couldn`t take no more. I didn`t put up much resistance, apart from the fact that we were in corner seats and would have to need a couple of people to stand up to let us out.

I`m not a massive Gervias fan, loved the Office, never got into Extras only seen a few, most other films have been cameos so far.

Liked Ghost Town though, thought it may be okay but I enjoyed it in the end.

Just couldn`t get into this at all though, barely sn*****ed.

Gervais is something of a one trick pony and whilst that one trick was amusing for a while (The Office) it`s definitely becoming a case of diminishing returns.

Also - what`s with all the arrogance in interviews? At first I thought it was irony but now I think he genuinely believes his own hype. :/
