rehan (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 24th November 2009, 13:01

I have got the three disk Blu ray that comes with a digital copy. Whats to stop me putting the digital copy on my hard drive and my Ipod and my sisters Ipod and her computer and....?

You get the idea!

Is there any copy protection?

Like all Digital Copies, it`s DRM`d up the arse. Fekkin` useless waste of discs those things.

When you insert the disc it asks if you want to use it with windows media player or iTunes.
As I don`t have an ipod I picked windows media player.
It asks you if the video folder in my documents is the location you want the file copied to.
You have to enter a code which is in the case. You need to be on-line as well as the code is checked.

It then copies two video files, Star_Trek_PC_EN & then Star_Trek_PORT_EN
The PC file is 1.3gb, the portable player file is 537mb.
I have to use Windows Media player to watch it, but at least I didn`t have to do anything to rip the file so its worth it to me. I really doubt you can copy it to multiple players, but I don`t know what the limit is.

I know a lot of people hate digital copies, but I`m glad they are included.
Of course I will watch the movie on my blu-ray player first, there`s no point in buying it on blu-ray & only watching the digital copy.
But I`ve seen more movies it the last 12 months on my netbook because its been with me while travelling, or while I`ve been way from home. Most of the video files I`ve watched have been ripped from dvd by me. But I don`t have a blu-ray drive fitted to my home PC or my Laptop so ripping the film from a blu-ray myself isn`t an option.
Plus, I have no ideal if you can rip a blu-ray anyway. I`m sure someone`s worked out how to do it by now, but guessing, I`d imagine you would need a very fast PC & loads of hard drive space. If I can buy a movie with the ripping done for me then that`s great.

Owning a netbook has changed the way I watch movies. And digital copies mean I can buy a blu-ray instead of a dvd because I wouldn`t have to rip it myself.
I have recently ordered a few dvd`s instead of blu-rays because I wanted a copy I could watch on the move. If a digital copy was included as standard, I`d only buy blu-ray. It also means that I get to enjoy a movie more than once.

I`m interested to know whether the DRM`d versions work on the PS3 as well?

Pat - in terms of ripping a BD, it can (and is) done, but it`s not quick.
It can take a whole day on a fairly quick PC to re-encode one to a smaller file size/resolution/bit-rate. So I agree a pre-made version is ideal, providing it can be used on multiple machines (I suppose iTunes makes that possible for Windows & Macs), but if that also works on the PS3 I`d be happy with that.

EDIT: I`ve just realised this sounds a bit daft (wanting to watch a ripped BD on the PS3!)...but I like to have my entire movie collection on an external drive which I can take with me when we go away rather than carting all the discs around as well.

Thanks for the info re ripping a blu-ray, think I`ll give that a miss then :D

re, digital copies working on PS3- I don`t see how that could work, isn`t it licensed to playback on a laptop/portable, & not a external drive/usb key?
I can`t get the file to playback in any other software i.e VCL or GOM, only Windows Media Player
