Raimi And Maguire Leave Spider-Man 4

After a week dogged by rumours that Sam Raimi was at loggerheads with Sony over Spider-Man 4, the studio has just announced that they are shelving the Raimi-directed Spider-Man franchise, with a view to completely rebooting the character in 2012.

Well, you didn`t need spider-sense to see this one coming. After a week dogged by rumours that Sam Raimi was at loggerheads with Sony over Spider-Man 4, the studio has just announced that they are shelving the Raimi-directed Spider-Man franchise, with a view to completely rebooting the character in 2012.

The reboot, which will be scripted by James Vanderbilt, will return Peter Parker to his high school/drippy teen origins, as he comes into very close contact with a radioactive spider.

Sony issued the following statement, from Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, just minutes ago:

"...we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. We`re very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter`s roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning."

At the moment, there`s no real information about the reboot`s director, while we presume that the search for a new young star to don Maguire`s mask won`t begin for a while (but already Zac Efron`s name is being bandied around).

But Sony will release more news about their plans for a new Spider-Man movie in due course. In the meantime, let us know what you think: is this too early for a reboot? After all, it will have been just five years since Spider-Man 3.

Great another f***ing Marvel remake.

I blame the producers. Interfering f***ers have too much control. They should leave it to the people who, you know, can actually make films.

Oh for God`s sake! This trilogy only finished a few years ago and they`ve already got plans to go back to the beginning and start all over again!!

Hollywood the mediocrity factory just keeps on churning out the same films over and over in shiny new packaging.

This is the problem that the comics sufferred from. PP getting married, a job etc. Spiderman was a hit as he was a teenager superhero. How they can do that when the actors keep getting older!

At least there are no plans to try the Hulk again, for that we should be thankful.

I don`t mind them rebooting Spiderman, I don`t see the harm in it, tis their money after all and we don`t have to go and see it. Who knows, they might do a very different but equally interesting take on the franchise. Spider-man 3 was the weakest of the 3 by far, so kind of glad it hasn`t gone on.

Maybe they will also bring back Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but rather than aiming it at kids, actually aim it at a more grown up market. No wait, that`s a terrible idea. :(

From AICN

Quote:
As previously rumored/conjectured, Marc Webb has been confirmed as the director of Sony`s SPIDEY reboot.

Official blurb

Quote:
"At its core, Spider-Man is a small, intimate human story about an everyday teenager that takes place in an epic super-human world. The key for us as we sought a new director was to identify filmmakers who could give sharp focus to Peter Parker`s life. We wanted someone who could capture the awe of being in Peter`s shoes so the audience could experience his sense of discovery while giving real heart to the emotion, anxiety, and recklessness of that age and coupling all of that with the adrenaline of Spider-Man`s adventure."

Just going to be more of the same surely.

That hasn`t been ruled out yet, can`t remember the producer involved but they`ve spoke about it quite a few times and think even last week Tim Roth made a comment about it.

Personally I thought that would have been the better option for Spiderman, do what the Hulk did, just ignore the previous films for being absolute canon and just tell the story they want to.

I quite enjoyed Ang Lee`s hulk, even if it was a bit too comic book (the distances he could jump), didn`t mind the second go either. But I suspect The Hulk just doesn`t translate that well to the big screen, perhaps it is just that too much of the point is Banner`s human side, trying to keep his anger in check.

Cinema goers (and the producers I guess too) want a lot of special effects, which means much of the film results in mindless destruction, which is if anything should be the most frightening side of The Hulk, but consumes so much of the film, becomes rather mundane.

Perhaps it would work if the actual Hulk was 10% of the entire movie, but I can`t see them making a comic book flick with all the character development to fill the remaining 90%.

Well at the moment he`s supposed to be the "bad guy" in the Avengers film, which is set to go as soon after they do Thor and is due out summer 2012, so maybe that is the best way to use him.

Then potentially afterwards as a character in the Avengers films, side character in the other spin offs?

Don`t make me Ang Lee. You wouldn`t like me when I`m Ang Lee.

Sorry, I couldn`t resist. I`ve always liked his version and prefer it to the Norton reboot, even if the Hulk`s increasing mass got a bit silly when he was twenty feet tall. Th jumping miles bit is true to the comics though, so I can forgive that.
