DVDs & Films Forum
After years of Halowe`en parties and trick or treating, I`ve had enough.. this year we`re going to stay in and watch a creepy film..
I`ve got an 8 and a 11 year old.. and I`m suddenly trying to think of a suitable film. It`s a special one-off, so I`ll make allowances on age restrictions..
They`re OK with stuff like Buffy and Angel.. I was thinking about American Werewolf (I know it`s an 18, but I don`t remember it being more violent and/or graphic than Whedon`s output..) I remember loving the film when I was their age!
Any suggestions?

Having seen it not so long ago I`d say AWIL is a considerable step up from Buffy
When I was that age I liked stuff like Gremlins/Critters and they`d be more suitable esp for an 8yr old I`d guess
RE: Suggestions for Halloween please
I would choose something maybe a little lighter, like The Hole (2010) - directed by Joe Dante, surprisingly scary for a 12A certificate.
If they are definitely prepared for something more grown-up, Sleepy Hollow is a perfect halloween movie, and no doubt the kids will love Johnny Depp.

Ooh yes Gremlins is a good choice for that age! Nothing too gory that I remember. I think the original Omen is pretty non-gory too (just the head slicing scene which is quite tame) if you want something darker.

The goonies :) while not being a horror there were a couple of jump out your seat moments for the younger ones

I enjoyed "The Hole" but I`m not sure it`s very halloweeny in any respect. Your kids may find it very boring or confusing.

I remember "The Hole" being quite sexual in content too, as it deals a lot with sexed up teenagers.
Gremlins is a good choice, and how about Poltergeist? And The Frighteners or Ghostbusters maybe? If they like musicals then Little Shop of Horrors is always a good pick. And finally Tremors, but can`t remember gore content in that one...

Poltergeist? And The Frighteners or Ghostbusters maybe? Ghostbusters, best film ever! Not very scary though. :) The Frighteners is another great choice, I don`t think there is anything in there worse than Pirates of the Carrabean!
But Poltergeist was one I thought about suggesting until I remembered the scene where...
SPOILER:
the guy rips his own face off on the mirror, maybe a bit too much for an 8 year old :o

"The Hole" that Ben mentioned is the film with Thora Birch I believe, and not the film by Joe Dante that people are suggesting.
Even with THAT scene, i think Poltergeist would be just fine. I certainly enjoyed it as a kid. The Frighteners is a tremendous choice,as is Tremors. They`re all great family horror flicks.
I`d add in Arachnophobia and what about something like Mimic, or The Facualty? Though my memory is hazy on those two.
For me, I`ve went with Blu-rays of The Omen, Brian DePalma`s Obsession, Poltergeist, and In their Sleep on DVD. Obviously, I don`t have kids!
