X box or PS2?

buster1966 (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 18th June 2002, 14:16

My girlfriend wants a games console for her birthday (honest). having played on a PS one a couple of years ago and not much since, i don`t have a clue what to get her.
whats best and why, X-box, PS2, game cube..... something else? also, my old PS one was modded, can the same be done to the new generation of consoles.
which console has the best range of games?

i have a DVD player, so the DVD capabilities are not important to me.

Thanks

Chris

ps2 mate. forget x-box- you can gewt a pc more powerful than that since the xbox only has the geforce 3 graphics card.

lol @ PS2. get a gamecube or an x-box. go into any game/eb store and just look for yourself, have a play on em, I`m sure you`ll make the right choice.

The GC has the best line up of games and will appeal to everyone.

The PS2 has lots of games but most are unoriginal and unappealing.....only a handful of PS2 games are worth buying out of hundreds, although i do own one for these reasons.

As you have a DVD player the GC is the best choice, as the PS2 and X-Box have very poor DVD playback anyway.

All X-Box and PS2 games are aimed at males apart from a few.... Britney Spears dance mix...(Rubbish) and Space Channel 5 PT 1+2 which i think are classics, but not worth buying one console for.

Nintendo make games that attract all ages and sexes so this would make be my first choice for a gift for a girlfriend.

Where do you get girlfriends that play computer games anyway? :-)

thoroughly agree with you as far as PS2 is concerned, but have you witnessed the xbox playback? It is ultra slick!

And the blokey who said " you can get better pc`s coz xbox uses geforce 3 technology" - if you can get me a pc for under 200 quid that plays dvd`s, games, is broadband enabled and has better than geforce 3 graphics - could you please send me the link!!!!!!!!!!!

FTR - my girlfriend loves her gamecube (monkeyball and pikmin mainly) so it`s probably your best bet!

I have,nt seen the quality of the Pal X-Box DVD playback, i am just comparing my US X-Box and JAP PS2 to my stand alone DVD player.

Both these consoles display in NTSC which is inferior to Pal so you could be correct..... check out the comparison IGNinsider done below....

Would suggest you get all three if you can afford it! Why limit yourself!
Gamecube - cute and Nintendo do make some lovely games, however already some games being developed are going to come on multiple discs as the 1.5Gb GC disc is too small. I find the controller too small for my big old hands!
PS/2 - loads of games out there, I expect the price will drop too soon. It`s looking very expensive against the others for what it gives. Can be chipped for playing other region game discs (though it takes a VERY stedy hand!)
XBOX - lovely DVD playback! - smooth and detailed graphics, 5.1 digital surround sound, Hard disk!! that doesn`t get cluttered with huge game level files (unlike PC) - loads of room for saves. Games that range from crap (Fusion Frenzy) to outstanding (Halo). I know I`m going to get shafted for this - but I find the controller just the right size for me, I found that even my dreamcast controllewr was giving me cramp in the hands after a while - never get it with the XBOX controller.

I picked my one up in Liverpool about 6 years ago over a game of Super Mario on the Snes. Trouble is she`s turned into the older, wiser model that knows you buy games/consoles as presents for her but really they`re for yourself (It was her birthday on Friday and I failed miserably in getting her to ask for a Gamecube/Digital Camera).

Gamecube M8 , if only to play Super Monkey Ball. What a fantastic game and with Mario Sunshine on the way, excellent graphics and good price Gamecube is the way to go ( in my opinion ) Happy Gaming :o)
