X-Box - R.I.P.?!

Moo.. (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 13th October 2002, 08:41

I own all three consoles and must say that after the initial bunch of games, the xd-box has left me disappointed. theres virtually f**k all killer apps on the immediate horizon (apart from Blinx) which i feel will as good as kill the machine off at chrstmas. even the release of x-box live and the recent aquisition of rare cant save them now. well at least we got halo...

I would have to disagree, splinter cell, timesplitters 2, unreal championship, rocky, batman:dark tomorrow, Ghost Recon, indiana jones, mech assault, jedi knight 2, DOA extreme volleyball etc most due out in november. If I had the money I would buy all of these, I am less impressed with the gamecube, I haven`t touched it for over a month.

All you guys who have a X-Box i must take my hat off to you.

Why you ask (or maybe not). Well since the machine launched in march with Halo, Gotham Street racer etc, there has been NOTHING out for the machine thats worth £45.00 (X-Box game prices).

With all the negative press the machine is getting at the moment i feel sorry for the X-Box, its gonna take time for some great games to come out. I will never buy another games machine other than the Playstation, but i think its important that the X-Box does well otherwise Sony will have nobody to challenge them AND this would be bad for the games industry.

In reply to elephantstones original post i think he should stick with the
X-Box as in the long run the machine will be OK.

P.S. I heard that elephantstone collects dead machines 3DO,N64,Dreamcast THIS man does not belong on our forums?????

Remember the old consoles such as Atari Jaguar, I seem to remember that this was probably the best machine at the time, compared to Sega and Nintendo. But non-advertising and the lack of a great launch package of games killed Atari off. They were a great company with great products, ST, STe, Lynx, etc. They should not have failed.
I can see history repeating itself. There are too many platforms and the X Box could fail due to:
1. Microsoft - A lot of people hate them.
2. First console released by them, no pedigree.
3. Developers stick with the popular machine (Playstation/2) - sell more units).
The X Box maybe the best specified but remember Betamax!!!!

Note: I still have my Lynx potable but I only have 3 games!
I still have my STe with MIDI what a music machine this was.
The programmes written for 512K of memory was just awesome. It was the gameplay that mattered not fancy CGI, 5.1 sound, etc.

It`s not always the best hardware that does poorly! Remember the Amiga? That was (marginally) more powerful than the ST, and eventually overtook it in terms of popularity, before the 16bit machines died. I think it`s too early to say that any of the major consoles is in trouble. I think the problem is that there is a large amount of overlap. In other words, PS2 was out way before XBox and GC, which are now having to compete against a large user base and a huge catalogue of games. I remember when the PS2 came out there weren`t THAT many good games for it either. It takes time for the top titles to come out. GTA3 and GT3 weren`t launch titles for PS2, but they are arguably 2 of its top titles - great games both. I think what will happen is that more and more publishers will commit to doing cross platform games (think EA), with the occasional single platform title that makes everyone look at the machine and go "hmm, i`d like that". Also, I would say that PS2 has probably peaked in its natural life, and will continue to be at the top for a while yet. However, the potential growth of the other machines is great, and they will be peaking whilst the PS2 declines, and Sony prepares for PS3.

I shan`t be preparing the last rites just yet!

Hey guys, but some of you said that the X-Box had no pedigree? But neither did the Playstation, the Saturn was supposed to be essentially the slightly more powerful, and had the rep (like a fool i got one, tuh!), as did the N64, but who won? the Ps, because its full of old amiga chips, so the programers could design games for it more easily, whereas the Saturn, had new chips, but no solid games (well, not enough, Sonic R still owns). Its games support that is what makes a console (thats why the Gamecube is dead in water, i have seen the future lineup, noting.)

Also, the Xbox two is supposed to be coming out before PS3(2005, (said a very determined Mr. X-box). The infrastructure for that machine is going to leave support for the X-box drowning.

Sorry Guys!
