Help With PS2 and NTL Broadband

Have purchased Socom and network adapter and when i run test Connection could not be established.
Do i have to subscribe to NTL`s Broadband + PS2 console fee or can i do it other ways?

Have you used a cross over UTP cable between PS2 & cable modem ?
