Updating firmware - a JAP PSP in UK via Wifi ??? or connecting to Sony.
Hello All
I read on play-asia that a new firmware update is available for the PSP.
They also say you can connect to a Sony site to download games/trailers and also perform this update via a Wifi connection.
Can anyone help? I can see the name of my wireless router on the PSP screen, I select it and type in the WEP Encryption Key, the PSP says `connecting` and then after a while says `connection failed`.
So far, play-asia have said that they have had this working, but I wondered if anyone else here can help.

i have no idea about the download thing, but could your router be
blocking the PSP access? have you got MAC (address) filtering
switched on on the router? if so, this could be denying the PSP`s
wireless access.....does the PSP generate / receive an IP address
as per a pc?

I downloaded my update a few weeks back. I have a wireless router connected to my broadband modem.
Encryption
I had to tell it what my ssid name was and the ssid key. if you have no encryption its even easier.
Turned the Wifi switch on and went to update in the main menu. Tada.

Rob
Thanks for the input. Could you give me a little more help please.
I have done the above, and also tried a `Scan` which comes up with my SSID, I then put my Hex WEP Key in, test the connection and it says `Connection Failed` after trying for quite a while.
Did you do your software update first via the memory card, or via a wireless connection?
Anything else you could think worth trying?
Thanks again for your help.

Is your wireless router/access point b and g? If so I think I read somewhere that the PSP has problems with g. Configure your wireless router/access point to b only and give it a shot. I have the same problem but I haven`t had time to change my wireless access point yet.
If you decide to try it let us know how you get on.
Cheers

Tried this and still no luck.
Re-configured PSP again with Auto and Manual settings and now get an error code when trying to connnect :-(
It recognises my Access Point, auto determines my SSID, I manually put in my WEP key and then get the error when testing the connection.

Sorry I`m not really helping but if and when I come to do mine (US - already 1.50), can it be done simply by downloading and transferring via USB?

Yes, the updates and any content can be downloaded and so long as you put it in the right location on the memory card, can be installed this way.
But the wireless capability is convenient (if it worked) and should also allow extra functionality, so would be really nice to get working.

Download the file from lik sang (sorry, I lost the direct link to the file) You will have to search around for it.
Extract it to your PC then transfer it to the GAME folder on the PSP memory card and just run it from there. Like a normal game.
Make sure you are using the adaptor so no danger of power running out due to low battery.
