Anyone recommend some classic X-Box games?

Chris Gould (Elite) posted this on Monday, 22nd May 2006, 21:53

I just bought a second hand X-Box and three games (Revenge of the Sith, Destroy All Humans and Psi-Ops) for £65, and now I`m looking for some advice on the classics I must own.

I waited until now as I was fed up of paying full retail for consoles, and I really wanted to play the first two games I bought. What are the best places to buy games (preferably as cheap as posible) on the high street?

I`m looking for stuff not available on the PC that is a lot of fun, with some life to it. Hulk Ultimate Destruction looks good, as does the Riddick: Butcher Bay game (from what I`ve seen). Obviously Halo is one that everyone mentions, but I played that on the PC.

Any tips appreciated. I really like action games and shooters, rather than driving and sports games. Something a little out of the ordinary (like DAH) would be spot on, as I get a bit fed up witht he samey first person stuff on the PC. Bloke in the shop told me Psi-Ops was an undiscovered gem...

Escape From Butcher Bay is a great little game. Both Psychonauts and Incredible Hulk: UD are on my B`day list!

It`s alright, but Second Sight from Free Radical (ex-Rare guys responsible for Timesplitters) is vastly superior. IMO, of course :)

Here`s some of my faves:

Oddworld: Stranger`s Wrath (most original FPS-cum-3rd person Clint Eastwood `em up)

Ninja Gaiden (You`ll love it or despise it after 30 mins, though)

Fable (I`ve got The Lost Chapters, but it doesn`t make a blind bit of difference)

Metal Arms: Glitch In The System
(You can pick this up so cheap now, you`d be a fool, A FOOL not to get it)

Beyond Good and Evil
(I`ve got it on PS2, but that`a not the point.)

Buffy The Vampire Slayer
(Love or hate the show, this is a smashing early Xbox title)

Panzer Dragoon Orta (if you like shooters in the more traditional sense.)

Splinter Cell 1-3: (Sneaky sneaky!)

Thief: Deadly Shadows (Sneaky sneaky, but with slapjacks, bows and fake eyeballs.)

JSRF (Cell shaded Japanese kids fight the man... with grafitti)

KOTOR (But I`m sure you`ve played this on the PC)

Your best bet for hightstreet cheapness is Gamestation, particularly their 4 for £20 used section. Just hold your nose as you go in.

LOL, cheers. It was in Gamestation that I got the X-Box itself, and it wasn`t as smelly as some I`ve been into ;) Thing is I kind of bought it on a whim and don`t know a lot about the games, or at least which ones are worth the money. Bloke was quite helpful though (well, one of them was) and steered me towards Psi-Ops when I couldn`t find another game to go with the deal. They didn`t have a hell of a lot in the 4 for £20 section, but there were a few in the 2 for £20 that I liked the look of. Trouble was I really wanted to play the ROTS game, which was in one section, so in the end they let me have one from the more expensive section and two from the cheaper section.

They had quite a few £4 games, the real old stuff like Onimusha. Is that any good? Seems like a laugh going around with huge swords, but I prefer the more open ended combat rather than turn based (like KOTOR I & II, which I have indeed played on PC). I was told Jade Empire was good, but wasn`t sold from the video I watched on IGN.

I think the Hulk one is a must though, as I`m a sucker for smashing things up and superhero games :) I love Spidey 2 on the `Cube. Might even get the original Spidey for X-Box if I can find it cheap as chips, as I believe it has an extra level. Superman Returns also looks like it might be good.

I`m not working at the moment so I bought it to cheer myself up and stave off boredom, but it means the games have to be cheap. I also got the older controller, which seems like it was made for Andre the Giant! It`s also a bit cack that it doesn`t come with an RGB cable and Dolby Digital out as standard. Oh, and is it supposed to lose the time/date every time I unplug it?

Cheers all.

PS - Oh, are there any decent wrestling games for it? One that features all the old late 80s early 90s wrestlers? I`m not a wrestling fan, but some of my favourite games on the old SNES were things like Royal Rumble :)

Heh, then this might be right up your alley. I certainly enjoyed it.

I have to admit, I never really took to Onimusha, but slicing things up with a sword (or flails!) doesn`t get much better than in Ninja Gaiden. The only thing is that it can be frustratingly tough at times.

Controller wise, I just recieved my Joytech Neo S Wireless today (£14.99 from Play). I didn`t think the wireless... er.. ness would be a big deal as I was really only after a second pad for my Xbox, but It`s great. It`s a wee bit smaller than the official S pad, but you get used to it.

Your Xbox will lose it`s time and date (or, at least mine does) when you unplug it from the mains, which is a right royal pain!

Oh yeah, and (sadly) the only rasslin` games featuring a full roster of oldies are the Legends Of Wrestling games. And they are truly, truly abysmal. In fact, the Xbox is the only console not to have a good, solid wrestling game at all.

Heh, must be the season for it. I`ve just bought an Xbox too (from Play.com). Got fed up with the ol` GC, so sold it on and switched sides! ;)

I`ve currently got:

Pro Evolution Soccer 4 (£5.99) ebay
Jade Empire (£9.99) virgin megastore
Oddworld Stranger`s Wrath (£7.47) amazon
Halo Triple pack (£17.97) amazon
Sonic Mega Collection Plus (£9.99) virgin megastore
Burnout 3 (£7.81) the hut.com
GTA Double Pack (£16.75) cd-wow
Broken Sword 3 (£7.99) blahdvd.com

I`ve listed the prices and stores just in case you fancy any of those. I reckon they`re about the best prices you`ll find for those items on the net. All of them new and sealed (even the ebay one).

So far I`m absolutely loving up the Xbox, and wish I`d got one sooner. Pity the stupid Nintendo zealot eh?

Never again....

EDIT: FAO Chris Gould. If you`re looking for something with some life to it, I absolutely wholeheartedly recommend Burnout 3: Takedown. It`s the racer of your dreams, and amazing fun. Trust me...

Hehe cheers, but I suck at racing games ;) I`m also a convert from the `Cube.I paid full price for that, plus memory cards, plus the RGB cable, plus another controller... Never again. I`m enjoying the X-Box more in the first few days then I did the `Cube, which I only really got for the Star Wars games and Mario/Zelda. Most of the other decent games I have are better on the `Box, such as the Spider-Man games and, well, just about everything!

I was eBaying for Butcher Bay and it seems you can get it for around £5. It`s that price on GameStation, so I`ll probably head to my local games store (which really does smell) and see what they have. Hulk seems to go for around a tenner as well. One thing I`ve noticed is that the second hand games seem to be cheaper on the `Box than on the `Cube, most likely because it`s so much more popular. Ah well, I`ll always have a soft spot for Nintendo after the SNES and N64... At least I didn`t buy a PS2!

I`m like that too. I don`t get on too well with yer GT4`s and PGR`s, but Burnout is very different. It`s aim is to entertain, and it is very good at what it does! If you get the chance to have a go, I`m sure it`ll change your mind.

I know where you`re coming from regarding the GC/Xbox comparison. For my part too I`ve found the Xbox to be far more enjoyable in the last few days compared to the GC after two years! I absolutely loved Animal Crossing though, and hope the missus gets a Wii just for it. But for myself I think my Nintendo days are done for the most part. Wavy Zelda just doesn`t entice me.
