Why no decent Gaming shows on TV?

Jibba (Competent) posted this on Friday, 27th October 2006, 09:17

Many 20-40 somethings own a games console of some sort and regularly use it. The expense of games (£30-50+) and games content prove this is just not a market for youngsters. Why is it that the beeb (or any other channel) cant produce a games console & game review programme aimed at adults? The industry is now huge and is set to grow with the impending PS3 and Wii launches ~ lets have an adult orientated programme! BBC3 methinks?

Why is it such a popular past time is overlooked by the media? :B

Gamer TV, or whatever its called, on bravo is quite good. The thing is, its a question thats been kicking around for ages `gaming is huge.....why no decent shows?`. Ultimately, its because no one watches them and a decent format hasnt been found. The only one, really, that ever did anything was Gamesmaster and that was, arguably, more to do with Dominik Diamond than anything else.

Gamers already read magazines and the internet. To be honest, if im going to be staring at my telly watching games, I want to be playing them. Gamesmaster managed to break away from that by being hilariously funny. The sad thing is, there are gamers reading the gamesmaster magazine who cant remember the show and DD is just the fat bearded scot on every other top 100 tv show....

The ppl behind http://www.consolevania.com/ have season 2 of videoGaiden starting soon.

Seaons 1 was Fri nights bbc 2 Scotland only, and I believe season 2 will be the same, but the BBC did let you stream it from their site. You could also get it by other means a day or 2 after broadcast.

the big advantage those guys have is that they actually enjoy playing games, and aren`t afraid to call a spade a spade. They v funny to, in an offensive kind of way :) ConsoleVania is def adults only.

Dominic Diamond did a gaming show on bravo recently, with an hawian theme. WHEN GAMES ATTACK it was very funny and should have been on prime time TV.

`Gamer.TV`, `When Games Attack`, `Gamepad` (with Violet Berlin) and `Around the World in 80 Games` were/are all made for Bravo by the same production company, and all bring their own spin on gaming, Cybernet is still made by Capricorn and is shown on low budget Sky channels (ie compressed to f*** and artefacted up the arse), but ITV no longer have any interest in it, what with all this easy-money-quiz-s*** scheduling.

Gamesmaster was the dog`s, but its spiritual successor, `Bits`, is still the crown prince of the TV gaming show for grown-ups.

Thumb Bandits was f***ing awful, Gamezville was beyond vitriol and the only saving grace on Rapture`s G[at]srem is the hot Scot Kate Heavenor, even though she appears to know as much about games as Jack Thompson.

As far as the Beeb producing a gaming show - considering their item on the Golden Joystiq awards on News 24 tonight was prefaced with news of a "game about bullying" hitting the streets, I think I`d rather games shows were left in the hands of small production companies who know how to deliver what gamers want, and broadcast on channels willing to schedule them appropriately, and treat the scene with the respect it deserves.

I strongly recommend you try and dl the series 1 of videogaiden. On their website they joke about how the bbc are clueless, and just let them get on with it more or less. i think each episode was only 10 mins or so.

Videogaiden was selp made by some Scotish gamers, some-one with some common-sense at the BBC realised it had becoem an internet phenomenom so they got them to make a show for BBC. i think I heard of it from Gamer on Bravo, and GamesTM.

Also, they may DD look like Mary Whitehouse :) I liked DD on GamesMaster all those years ago, but thought When Games Attack was terrible self indulgent nonsense.

Round the World in 80 games was really good though.

Okay, so its being shown on BBC Scotland at 11.10pm, so I`m right in guessing it will be shown UK-wide at the same time on the channel given? (or is Channel 971 BBC Scotland anyway?)
