Monday 2-Apr-2007 11:31 AM Repair service aborted, GD-ROM production ceased

Sega`s Dreamcast repair service, which has continued to operate despite production of the console having been halted in 2001, will cease from September 28, hammering the final nail into Dreamcast`s coffin.

This news comes after production of the GD-ROM, Sega`s proprietary discs used for Dreamcast, having been aborted in February. This puts an end to the few Japanese releases which, oddly, still snuck out from time to time, Trigger Heart Exelica and Karous being two released this year.

This could also mean the end for Sega`s Dreamcast-based Naomi arcade machines, which also use the GD-ROM format, although it is suggested that developers may be able to continue using ROM boards as an alternative on the machine.

This also marks a complete end to Sega`s involvement in the hardware market. We`re wiping a tear from our eye...

I only know 3 or 4 ppl who got one, but I know there`s some fans here. I`ve always found it amazing how it bombed here, yet those that bought them love them, and that in JPN it was a success and continued to have new games right up until recently. I get the impression that everything that`s come out in the last couple of years is top down 2d shooters, but if that`s your thing then no reason to move on :)

Dreamcast kicked console arse, yet was outsold by the PSX. It`s a shame, bit at least its garnered a cult following.

Ditto. I`ve still got one in the attic, along with Shenmue 2 (which i never really played) and sould caliber.

If it wasn`t for the DC, i probably wouldn`t be as `into` the internet as I am today.

Did anyone actually notice any speed-up on the 15.5kbps modem after you entered the `hack`?
