Consoles and TVs?

Dermot Ologist (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 27th May 2002, 20:55

Finally talked the missus into letting me buy a new console for our lad (& me!) but need to get a TV for it aswell. I want to get something bigger than a portable but should I go Widescreen or 4:3? The TV will mostly be used for games with the odd movie watching session and very occasionally TV....

Basically, will the game visuals appear stretched on a W/S TV or look as good on a 4:3 TV?

All advice appreciated......

(Wasn`t sure whether to post this in Hardware or Consoles?!?!?)

If the main use of the TV is for games playing, I would seriously consider getting a 4:3 one. Although widescreen games are starting to appear, most games are still 4:3 only.

If you do get a widescreen TV, however, the screen needn`t look stretched - you can just put the TV into 4:3 mode when playing 4:3 games (so the screen is the right shape, but with black bars either side).

Thanks Mike. I`ll save myself a few quid aswell. (Probably spend it on games though!)

A few N64 games were published with a 16:9 option towards the end of its life (I`m thinking of Rare games in particular). I`m a little disappointed that none of the games I`ve seen on the Gamecube support this yet, but it may come.

Do you already have a Widescreen TV for watching movies ? If not, I`d recommend you go for one.
