Anamorphic on.... 4:3 TV`s?

Steve1977 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 30th November 2000, 21:51

ok, I havent gone completely mad but, does anamorphic mode work on TV`s with a 16:9 button?
I ask this cause if it doesent the black bars will be much thicker to keep the correct ratio but if anamorphic does work when tv`s are switched to 16:9 mode it will only have the original and much smaller black bars on the top and bottom.

Is it possible? Anyone tried it?

many 4:3 TVs with 16:9 mode oversquash/stretch anamorphic material. ie. the manufacturer of the tv set the wrong ratios.

If the TV is set properly and you want to use the 16:9 mode you need to set the dvd player to output 16:9 anamorphic video.

Don`t forget anamoprhic video has NOTHING to do with filling all the screen of a widescreen (or fullscreen) tv. It`s just a way of increasing the resolution.

A 1.85:1 movie will have black bars.

A 2.35:1 movie will still have massive black bars on a 4:3 tv (the size of the bars will be the same for both anamorphic and non-anamorphic video).

To make sure you have everything set up correctly make sure the player is set to output 16:9 widescreen.

Start a movie.

With the TVs 16:9 mode off if the image is vertically stretched ie. tall, thin people then that is anamorphic video, press the 16:9 button to put the film in to the correct ratio.

If when the TVs 16:9 mode is off and the image is of the correct ratio and not vertically stretched then the video is not anamorphic and you should not use the 16:9 mode on the tv
