Am I right in thinking the i-link on Sony laptops is for transfering video footage from cam-corders? Is it only Sony cam-corders that have this output?
Thanks,
Ross.

I think it`s basically a firewire port, but with a different connector (thanks Sony), so you may need an adapter cable to connect it to a different camcorder. IIRC, the port doesn`t supply power, so can`t be used for other devices that need to be powered from the firewire port.

i-link is just what Sony call the IEE1394 interface. It is also known as DV and firewire but they are all the same.
The connectors are the same so the same cable will be able to connect any camcorder with a DV/i-link output.

No, Sony laptops have a 4 wire rather than a 6 wire cable - well, mine does, and (IIRC), I think R8sso has the same model as me (FX-401?) - as I said, I`m pretty sure it`s missing the power connections, and so can`t be used to connect Firewire hard discs, for instance.
Thanks for that.
On a different note, have you tried flashing the firmware on your DVD drive Rich? I noticed that http://www.firmware.fr.st/ now have a modified version of our firmware ( ESC9 ).

Hmmmm - might have another go - never got it to work before - drive still works OK, but reported as R2 still. I had a play recently, looking at the hex file and tinkering around (from instructions I found - I wouldn`t want you to think I knew what I was doing!!) - no joy - I`ll keep you informed when I try the new firmware.
