I can`t see what all the fuss was about.
OK, well made, but nothing groundbreaking - split screen was (mostly) given up sometime in the seventies becuase it`s crap and High Noon and a lame film made some years ago where Keanu Reeves (I think) had to assassinate someone after his son was kidnapped were both shot in realtime.
Or is it just me?
Probably not just you, but probably not many more. ;)
I think the uniqueness of the splitscreen was mainly down to the realtime aspect of the series. It`s certainly the only show where you don`t have to glance down at the video clock to see how long is left, it tells you right there on the screen.
I found the clock became for me a countdown to this episode`s cliffhanger, which itself made it more tense.
My first feelings on the splitscreen halfway through the first episode was its a bleedin gimmick! But I changed my mind before the first one ended.
"Keanu Reeves (?)" - It was Johnny Depp (with glasses) having a stab at a mainstream film, although the title escapes me (Nick of Time?, was he called Nick??). Anyway I never saw 24, but I may have given it a go if they`d called it "12"
or even "1 1/2". :-)
I watched the first one, and even though I felt it was good it didn`t hold me enough to want to watch the next one. I caught bits and pieces of episodes but the whole premise that all this happened in one day - come on that`s a pretty eventful day, right?
So how can they make a second series without going over the top?

I agree. I watched a couple of installments but then gave up. I did watch the last one though just to see how it ended.
I think the whole business of his wife and daughter being kidnapped dragged on too long. I got bored.
Oh yes, why did each installment only last 45mins?

I disagree. It was really well made and gripping throughout.
The reason why each episode was only 45 minutes long was because there were no ad breaks - it ran for an hour in the states with ad breaks.
I also agree that it was exagerated. There was one episode where the two girls escaped their kidnappers and every person they seemed to run into was some kind of low life who wanted to rob/hurt or abuse them somehow. It ended up just becoming farcical, I mean, how much bad luck can one person have in 1 hour?

Yes, the Johnny Depp movie was Nick of Time. It was okay.
As for 24, hmmm, I liked it for the first couple of months, then I have to admit that I got a bit bored of it. How much can one do in 24hours with sleep deprivation? Continual kidnaps and blackmail attempts and on top of this keeping your cool and looking like you don`t need a quick kip for fear that someone will a) stab you in the back and b) kidnap Kim, again.
Despite being a little bored by it sometimes, there were some good episodes, and I think watching it back-to-back in the boxset might add more to it. I can wait until next year to get the boxset, too many other more interesting things to spend money on! :-)
I watched the first 2 episodes. Come on people get a grip, it was dull and gimmicky. Crap characters and script. Not on my list.
