BROADBAND!!!

geriatric (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 13th October 2002, 17:57

I know this is primarily a dvd site but I`ve been so p---ed-off this afetrnoon trying to get a connection (to this site) that i am now seriously considering spending some my limited income going Broadband.
i`m lucky that I can have most of the options available where I live.

What is the cheapest available at the moment (should I wait longer as most providers demand a 12 month contract)??

I`ve seen Tiscali 256kbps at £19.99pm (plus £50.00 connection fee)
Is this the best deal around??

I`m personally with freedom2surf @ £22.50/month for 512k/256k

256k may be fine for some users but not me. I need the full 512k I get from Pipex which is £23.44 plus £80 connection fee (I think, when I joined in Februaruy there was no connection fee)

If your getting broadband for the permanant connectional alone 256k may be adequate, but if your planning on downloading spend a few more £££ a month as this slow broadband won`t cut it.

IMO 256k isn`t true bband, you need at least 376k to handle streaming good quality video CD quality audio.

you`ll be lucky!...

I`ve got 1MB Blueyonder service.. downloads are about 126k per sec, with uploads being capped at 30k..

HaGGis,

It doesn`t work like that. When you had a 56Kbps modem were you downloading files at 56 kb per sec? I doubt it, on my BT lines I was lucky to get 3k a second. Now that I`m on broadband (512 DL / 256 UL) I average 55k to 60k a second on large DL`s and 25k on large uploads.

The 126k per sec your getting on your 1Mb service sounds about right, roughly twice as much as me.

[edit] - sj, I think sparkster was refering to geriatric`s initial post:

not Rob_B`s:

sounds like you are confusing MegaBytes/s with Megabits/s

8 bits in a byte, so a 1megabit connection will download at roughly 1024K/8bits=128Kbytes depending on the host machine.

a 512K will be 512/8=64Kbytes/sec which is the close to the best I get on pipex, normally 55-60K/s.

I agree with Sashenden your 3k x8 would have been 24kbits/sec (although thats still slow, I was getting 45333 normally on NTLworld).

I`ve just switched to NTL Broadband last week, and all I can say...is warp speed compared to my old dialup. I downloaded a 73MB video last night (rubbish vid, just wanted to see how long it took) in 20mins...awesome! Video streaming is great too, no more choppy picture or waiting for it to rebuffer. I would have done it ages ago but they kept messing me around with installation dates. Finally got it in 3rd time lucky.

They have a deal on at the moment, free installation (normally £50) and your first month at the 128 speed price of £14.99, then it goes to the standard price of £24.99. This is for a 600k connection...good deal I think.

There is the 12 month contract period, but I`ve already been on NTL World dial up for about 3 years so that didnt` bother me. I thought it was worth the price because the normal dial up is £10 a month, and I was paying £7 a month for a second line so it didn`t tie they phone up. With broadband it comes down the same cable as the TV so I don`t need the second phone line anymore which offsets the cost of the broadband.

I`ve speed tested mine on various sites and its doing between 630k and 680k. Upload speed is 128k I think, but this tested out at 154k.

Mark.
