CAR CD/RADIO`S ?????????????????????????????

colseddon (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 31st October 2002, 13:13

I want a car CD player at a cheap price but with some neccessary features.

I need it to play CD-R (and poss CD-RW but this is not essential).
I want it 2 have RDS,
and that thing so it tells you the name of the radio stations.
Volume output isns`t that important, but it has 2 have a detachable front.

Can any1 recommend which retailers or models 2 check out. I would prefer high street than internet 4 this in case i have any problems with it etc.

I have seen a aiwa 1 in ARGOS for 99.99
and a JVC 1 in halfords for 119.99 that both look OK.

So any suggestions of what & where 2 look will be much appreciated.
Thanks.

I have a Sony one in my car I`ve had 5 or 6 years now, and that plays CDR`s no problem, so I would think by now most of them will play them.

The thing that names the station RDS (Radio Data System) and EON (Enhanced Other Networks)?
One gives the station name and the other interrupts the radio, CD with traffic news when available. I always forget which is which :-)

Mine doesn`t have that, but I think it`s pretty standard nowadays. Argos is usually pretty good, and I think whatever you get nowadays will have most of the features. Plus with Argos you`ve got the 16 day money back guarantee.

Mark.

Got a Kenwood 3090 ( £150 ) had it for about 18 months does all you want a player to do and comes with free theft insurance for 1 year on head unit only not removable front , bought it because it was one of the cheapest / best players that were compatable with cdr and cdrw you should find a newer model of similar or higher spec at lower price now

Go for the JVC at Halfords its a nice unit for the price it plays cdrs and has rds function it displays your station as well. You may need to buy a wiring loom to fit it (£10.99) there is a £35 pound fitting charge but it should be as simple as taking the old unit out fitting the loom and putting the new unit in. You may need a facia panel if you have a factory fit oversized radio. ps this model is available with red or green display.

Ive got a £2000 Alpine, amazing sound, depth, etc, sorry!!!

Ive fitted hundreds of cd players over the years and you do get what you pay for, Jvc`c are a little un-reliable if not fitted securely they jump a bit if you go over pot holes or speed bumps to quick. Older Sony`s are complete junk (6+ years old) they brake down within days of fitting them and would bounce all over the place, I refused to sell them until recently as they were so un-reliable, there new stuff is a miles better, good sound quality and much more reliable.
At the end of the day you decide how much you want to pay and get the best you can for that money. having RDS will display the name of the station you are listeneing to. Stay away from gimmick features like disk titling, or flashing lights all over the place (Pioneer, cough, cough) as they are just there to knock the price up, the playing side of things are identical to a player at half the price.
Get yourself a copy of max power in the car magazine section of you local newsagent, it is full of chesty young girls and adverts, chances are you can get a player that is halfords is £200 for about £120.
Every single one I have tried will play finalized cdr`s but not all will play cd-rw or un-finalized cdr`s, check the manufacturs site if you not sure.

When you get it make sure it is very secure in you dash and that the dash itself is solid as this will help prevent skipping.

www.bassjunkies.com

I got a quality 50x4 watt kenwood cd player which plays mp3 cd`s so it does play cdr`s/rw.

I Got it from them for £200 inc delivery and in halfords it was £280 plus fitting!

have a look at the website, and when i phoned them to see if they had in stock, they checked if they could get it for even lower!
