PC Monitor Starts....and then goes into standby

Alan Titherington (Reviewer) posted this on Wednesday, 22nd January 2003, 22:15

No idea what`s going on...it all kicks off lovely and then decides to sleep before I can even see the BIOS info appear...I now have to use a cheap and cheerful Dell to see what Im up to. Not sure Ive done anything I shouldnt have done. The monitor that has cocked up is a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 720. Any help would be gratefully accepted.

Hmmm So from this I take it the other monitor works fine with the PC ?

Sounds to me like you may have a dead one on your hands, rarely I have seen a monitor that has done this that wasn`t gone. Only things I can suggest is testing it with different cables if you`ve done that there is little else you can do !

Cheers Tim....all that happens is that the Green light comes on...it makes the `deguassing` sounds (quite usual) and then a few seconds later, before anything appears on the screen decides to shut down and give me the `let`s flash the orange standby light on and off instead` routine.

Incidentally..this was first posted in the Hardware Forum as I often watch me DVDs on this machine and a good monitor (hardware) is essential...did I do something wrong, Moderators?..as I appear to have moved to `General`...ah well. If anyone has any advice (although I`m beginning to believe I may need a new one) it would be gratefully accepted.

Alan,

I had (or still have) a similar problem with my ADi Microscan. When I switch my monitor on while the PC is booting up it "thuds / pings" into action and I get the green light like everything is going to be fine then it just "clicks / flicks" to stand by. The problem with mine isn`t the actual monitor but the lead or connection with the back of the PC (I still haven`t been bothered to find out which!). If I pull the connection out then force it in again wiggle it about the monitor usually flicks to green and the picture comes on. The reason its in stand by (in my case) is that its not receiving a signal so it just shuts down. This may or may not be the same as what you`re experiencing but it does sound similar.

Ross.

Is it a dell PC?

When i worked down south the Dell had this quirk, the way we solved it was to hold the power button in on the base unit, whilst pushing the power cable into the monitor slowly!

It was weird, but worked everytime.

And reseat the video card. Had this a few times myself. The video card doesnt give any beep code errors but the monitor doesnt come on. AGP can be a bit touchy sometimes with all the connections jammed into such a small slot. I`m assuming it isnt on board video anyway.

Would I need to reseat the card even if another (slightly crappier) monitor works fine connected to the same port on the back of the `puter?.
