Credit card dilemma?

Ascomdog (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 11th February 2003, 21:33

Just before Xmas the girlfriend & I purchased an item on the card. They took an initial deposit and then said they would take a payment every month for the next five months. We thought this a good idea because it didn`t affect the price (no interest or extra charge etc), and we knew we would pay the monthly charges as soon as they were charged to the card. Basically, the idea was to spread the payment over six months as it was Xmas time etc.

Now, I`ve only just realised (honest...after wading through the Xmas purchases!) that they have only took the original deposit in December and no other payments for Jan or Feb have appeared on my card. Now, is it up to me to inform the company that they have forgotten to take payments? Thing is...I`m very sceptical that they may be up to some sort of scam in order to get more money out of me if I don`t pay the full balance before the six months is up (even though I haven`t agreed to such a contract). Not only that, I don`t want them charging me the full five months on the very last month...I`d sooner pay the monthly thing.

I know I`ll end up telling them even if it is solely their responsibility to collect the money...it`d feel like I was cheating them otherwise (I can hear the groans of `idiot` etc already!)

Just curious to know if anyone has had a similar experience?

Cheers.

I would probably contact them and query them as to the reasons why your credit card has not been debited. We had a similar problem a couple of years back with SKY Digital. They did not debit our bank account for about 6 months even after prompting from us. Thankfully we left the money due in the account anyway so no problem there when they finally debited the full amount.
I suppose in reality you should have nothing to worry about even if they did not debit your CC.
I hope the following is reasonably accurate.
You have fulfilled your contractual obligations by providing them with relevant authority to debit your Credit Card each month.
They will certainly be due the money at some date. However if they attempt to state that "You did not complete the necessary transaction within the 6 months period" and "Thereby you owe them a different amount" or some other spiel. In that event you can easily contact your Credit Card company and they will be able to verify that you have indeed given the authority and details to the company.

I`d definitely query it, otherwise it could be one of those if you don`t pay the full amount off in the agreed period you default to a credit plan at 38.99% interest, back-dated to the start of the plan scams that a certain well known high street company used to run.
