Direct Line Car Insurance - Has anyone had problems with them?

niteowl (Elite) posted this on Monday, 3rd March 2003, 22:28

Is it me or has anyone else encountered problems trying to make simple/fool proof changes to their existing Car insurance schedules - particularly with Direct Line.

Everything was agreed over the phone including the new charges. But when the new policy schedules arrived in post they were wrong. In fact we were charged extra for one policy that hadn`t even been changed.

Without going into detail - after being on the phone for 2 hours - still not sorted even though we were promised someone would call back tonight.

We`re now looking to change our car insurers. So will check out links to "good/reliable" Car insurers - assuming there are any.

Phew! I feel better now for getting it off my chest

They are bad with regard to the following:-

They do add on for any factory fitted extras like alloys & spoiler.

They give you the 1st year at a reasonable price, then they give a big hike the next year, and you have to leave.

There can be quite an argument over the valuation of your car if it is deemed a writeoff, as learned the hard way by a workmate (I suppose this one is common to mostl insurers to give minimum price).

Also have you noticed they are quick to pick up the phone when you dial the "Car quote" tel number but take for ever when you dial customer services.

They don`t like to give their name anymore - when asked I get passed onto the supervisor first.

The sad thing is I`ve been with them for a few years without any claims - just the usual renewal administration hic-ups - But ask them to change something on the policy they or thier computer systems can`t cope.

Niteowl.

I still haven`t had a reply from them either by phone or letter.

They`ve been good for me!

As for the price going up in the second year, I can`t believe that you must have made a claim.

"I can`t believe that you must have made a claim."

I dunno, it happened to me too. They told me it was because I`d moved to a new postcode. Funny though, I managed to get a quote half what they were asking for from someone else...

They were always good while I was with them though, I used to regularly add named drivers to the policy with no trouble at all.

Your better off going with Tescos they are cheap as chips, even cheaper if you do it over the net.

Main reason I would not dream of trying Direct Line is my brother in law had a hellish time trying to get them (Direct Line) to forward a no claims bonus certificate to his new insurers. They seemed very reluctant to send him or the new company the proof that he was entitled to whatever %age he had earned. If I remember right it took a couple of months and quite a great deal of time on the phone. Not a good advert for them I would think.
Regarding Tesco, yes the insurance is reasonably priced but make sure that if you get fully comp. it states in the policy that you can drive another vehicle, with owners permission, and be covered to 3rd party level. As some of their policies do not always cover this. Only reason I know this is that our daughter and son did not have this when they took out their fully comp policies. Possibly that is why their prices are so low as this reduces the risks?
JMHO folks
