On friday nite i was tucking into my Fish and Chips and it occured to me just how much it cost compared to what i actually got.

When i lived in Leicester and Nottingham a regular bag of chips would cost approx £1.20 - but for that £1.20 the amount of chips you get is phenominal - can easily feed two.

Not only that but they were always hot, fresh, golden, and thoroughly cooked.

In Rip - Off Cambridge, a `medium` bag of chips costs minimum £1.50 and is overcooked, shrivelled, VERY under sized and generally crap compared to up North.

I have tried nearly all the chip shops in Cambridge (no mean feat) and they`re all crap.

What is it with Northeners and chips???

Anything `north` of my place to me is `up north` and if they eat chips drowned in gravy out a polystyrene tray (as they do in Notts) then thats definitely up north, we`d never conduct that sort of of disgusting behaviour down here :-)

RE: Mortgage hunting - no bloody point till i`v raised at least a 5% deposit ie £5k. So keeping my eyes open but cant be assed otherwise...............

Best place for Fish and chips is in Scarborough seafront, dont care how much they cost, cause they are brill !!!!!!

In Chigwell my chippy charges about £1.20 I think for a small portion, bout £1.50 for a large I think. Its been a while since I`ve popped in

Bloody hell, it`s only about 80/90p for a bag of chips up here in Washington! You can get a pattie and chips for £1.30, and curry rice and chips for £2.60 in quantities big enough to make your stomach look as big as Barry`s from Eastenders!

Hi I think Fish and chips up north and in whitby scarborough etc near where we live are dire, awful.Crud.
Often poorly cooked, often dried out fish and in over used lard of all things, leaves you desperate for a hot drink to clear your palete.
Give me a much better cooked, down south done in vegaetable oil fish and chips anyday.
My Grandparents live next to Bedford in Kempston and there are two Fish and chip shops there one is Italien and the fish and chips from both are are beautiful. fresh tasting, cooked just right and way way beyond anything I`ve ever had up this way in 30 odd years I`m afraid.

If any of you happen to be in Belfast and in need of a fish supper or a battered pastie (not of the Cornish variety - I`m sure you English ones would have something similar but I haven`t a baldy what you`d call it), Bishop`s on Bradbury Place is hard to beat.

It`s opposite the monstrosity that is the M-Club (seeing is believing, folks!) but don`t let that put you off your food. I recommend the whiting.

Anyway, a decent-sized chip (sorry, `portion of chips`) costs around £1.20, if I remember right, and it`s worth every penny just to hear some wee slapper with a cheese-grater perm intoning `what`s yours, luv?`

I suppose the 20 years I spent covering the north of Britain ( The Shetlands down to Cheshire ) makes me a unofficial regional authority on " The Chippy "

Best Value was in Newcastle with huge portions at unbelievable low prices, worst was any of the MacDonalds type with the sad stringy tastless ubiquitous " fries " and made to size fish. " Errrugh "

In the Edinburgh area they automatically mumble " Salt n Sauce " and instead of vinegar use a part diluted brown sauce, very odd !

Although these day`s a personal forbidden delicacy, it`s still the staple of many " road warriors " ( indeed often preferable to some overpriced, over elaborate hotel meals ) and justifiably Britain`s favourite fast food.

Fish and chips near me (Teesside) is generally pretty good, and will set you back £2-£3. Chips only wouldn`t do more than £1 of damage to your pocket.

I`ve had some pretty damn fine Fish `n chips in Whitby, but I`ve also had some distinctly unimpressive examples as well. Went to the Magpie Cafe, supposed to be the best fish `n chips in a port that is famed for them, people queue to get inside... and thought they were pretty poor. Best fish `n chips I ever had was from the little chippy at the top of the bank in Staithes - pure battered heaven.
