Page 1 of Am I getting old?

Went to a couple`s Silver Wedding do last night at a local club, The woman works with my wife, and the husband works in the same place as myself. Anyway, lots of the men didn`t know each other, but some of us soon started chatting, and then we indulged in the buffet. It was a little hot as the air-conditioning had packed in (an understatement). But we`d barely finished eating when the lights went down and the guy running the disco cranked up the volume. Now i`m a man who likes his home cinema loud (the kids and the missus are always complaining), and i`ve seen lots of live bands in my time, many VERY loud, but this was insane. It resulted in severe earache, killed all hope of conversation, and everyone just sat drained and staring at each other in disbelief. It didn`t help that out of every hour at least 40 minutes were taken up with `rave` music. It was due to go on until 12.30 but by 11.20 most of us called it a night, and went home. God, I must sound like a real old codger, but you really had to be there!

Sounds like it was TOO LOUD!
Maybe the people running the music have been doing it so long that it has started to effect their hearing, so they had it playing louder than it should have been. The worst thing is when you go outside and you still can`t hear the person talking next to you because of the ringing in your ears. The cure for this is a bacon roll and an Irn Bru ;-)
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, no matter how wrong it is ;-)

You`re not getting old, it`s these mad b*stard DJs - too used to providing wall of sound experiences at raves, or (the worst kind) wannabe rave DJs who haven`t quite got the concept and play "The Birdie Song" through a 1KW amp.
I like to give my amp an occasional workout with something like "Dragon!" from Shrek (in DTS) or "Yippe-ki-yay" from Die Hard (also DTS). I have been known to demonstrate the power of my system by blowing a candle out with the bass reflex port of one of my front pair speakers...

I`d say it depends a lot on the music and the system.
Music which is meant to be loud and is played through a system which can cope with it is much easier to digest than an over-worked sound-system pumping out distorted, unbalanced dross - even though the decibel levels may be the same.
There`s also a time & a place for that kind of thing, and an over-hot room filled with people who don`t all know each other and who haven`t necessarily come to shake their booties to some slammin phat grooves sounds like a bleedin` nightmare! I wouldn`t lose too much sleep over it!
(Or maybe I`m getting old too!...)
Think i went to one of his disco`s!!!!!!! Totally ruined the night.
the simple fact that you refered to the muisic as "40 mins of rave music" proves that you are indeed getting old...
Haggis, you may be right, but I still think I can `cut-a-rug` with the best of them. Perhaps I should have thrown me zimmer frame away and done some `moves`, lol
