Captain Gatso strikes again

Colin Mac (Competent) posted this on Monday, 9th June 2003, 14:00

From an on-line motoring magazine today.....

Vandals who cut down speed cameras are forcing police to step up their efforts to catch them.

A group calling themselves Motorists Against Detection (MAD) says it has now destroyed 600 speed cameras.

Led by a masked character called Captain Gatso, MAD claims it only targets cameras which have been cynically sited to generate revenue.

MAD`s vandalism has already cost millions of pounds, and police concern is growing after two cameras were blown up in the Midlands using explosives

Whats your opinion?

Excellent! The vast majority of these cameras have nothing to do with road safety - but are merely income generators.

It would be ironic if they had to put up cameras to monitor the cameras.

Time and time again people on this board seem to be against cameras, which are after all, just upholding the law!

It`s not that hard, don`t want to pay a fine, don`t speed!

And don`t give me crap about speed killing, course it does, if you hit someone at 40 instead of 30mph, going to make a difference.

It seems to me that most DVD enthuiasts seem to be a bunch of working class, illiterate meatheads without an ounce of common sense.

Smiler - not one to generalise - It seems to me that most DVD enthuiasts seem to be a bunch of working class, illiterate meatheads without an ounce of common sense.- I see.
Before accusing people of things - check the spelling - enthuiasts (!!)

I agree - the cameras are there for a reason - under the govt guidelines usually a history of accidents. As for the people avocating speed - just we`ve all done it ( I regularly travel at 10-15 above the speed on motorways ) - but where`s there a camera its usually indicating a problem. I`ve seen the consequences and it isn`t nice - as for the BigBro conspiracy theory - for the actual cash generated the govt could easily generate this by a 1p on fags - its that inconsequential ( apologies Smiler - a few too many syllabubbles for you ).

Smiler - don`t be so sanctimonious. I am certainly not advocating that people drive around like lunatics. It`s well documented that these cameras have resulted in millions of pounds of extra revenue for the police. Some of them are located in accident blackspots - but many are not and are placed to catch the maximum number of motorists.

It`s also well known that the only time many law-abiding, middle class people are confronted by the law is when they are being handed a parking ticket or receive that little brown envelope after having being `caught` by a camera. These cameras make no allowances for the time of day or night or the number of pedestrians around etc.

At least when you were stopped by a proper traffic cop he/she had some discretion in the matter.

Nice to see your making friends Smiler!

There was a story about a local guy who chopped on of these camera`s down not long ago, got fined £4,500...... serves the tithead right for getting caught!

My view is these camera`s are always going to be a focus of vandalism by vexed drivers but at the end of the day they are there for a reason, to save life (or make money) we just have to live with them. However what does get right up my snotbox is the sly copper who sits behind a hedge/bus shelter/tree etc with a radar gun, these barstards should be struck down by lighting!

Seems to me that since you have been a member of these forums for three and a half years, by your own definition that must make you one of most lacking in common sense illiterate boneheads.

But then your thoughtless insulting generalism has already proved that, hasn`t it.

Would that be the same Daily Mail that regularly taunts hypochondriacs by reporting that practically everything that you eat or drink causes cancer? If you go back far enough, I`m sure that you`ll find some old Daily Mail articles about the dangers of wearing seatbelts, taking regular exercise and eating fruit and vegetables. The reporters at this right-wing rag seem to think that it`s terribly controversial to pretend that black is white.
