RE: Blimey! Macrovision on VHS was one big smokescreen.

IIRC, most (or all) tapes released by CIC Video in the 80s and early 90s didn`t have MacroVision. This would include Star Trek and anything CIC released on behalf of Paramount and Universal.

Some distributors/studios like CBS/Fox and Warner Home Video used it on practically everything from around 1987 onwards.

RE: Simpsons - for kids or adults only - Sky say...

Quote:
I lodged a complaint with the ASA a few months ago for an advert that was shown whilst watching the Simpsons on Sky 1 which scared my son a bit (I don`t normally do this sort of thing, so don`t think I was being arsey but it really did scare him).

What was the specific advert? Was it any worse than Doctor Who, for example? I mention Doctor Who because much of the merchandising is aimed at very young children, even though the actual episodes are frequently rated Cert 12 by the BBFC.

RE: TK Maxx takes hooded coat with concealed 2.5 inch blade off its shelves

Well to complete the set you can now apparently buy a cane with a 20 inch sword inside it from the same shop!!

Yep, here`s the story: http://www.lep.co.uk/latest-national-news/Sword-walking-stick-withdrawn.4559887.jp

Wonder how long it will be before someone discovers TK Maxx`s nunchaku chimes?

RE: TK Maxx takes hooded coat with concealed 2.5 inch blade off its shelves

It`s the sort of knife you can buy from the gift shop at a National Trust stately home.

"Ere`s a little memento of Capesthorne Hall, you c**t!"

LOL at the Daily Mail photographer`s desperate attempt to make a tiny pen knife look menacing.

RE: The Doctor is back at last!

That was Sir Robert MacLeish (Derek Riddell) from Tooth and Claw.

Is somebody going to lob his hand from the jar into the regenerating body to give it the DNA of the 10th Doctor as a clue to "bodyform" for want of a better word?

Yeah, that idea has wings. Hope the "bodyform" gives the Doc extra confidence while he`s fighting the Daleks.

RE: Hancock: A Proper Superhero :)

Can`t wait to hear Smith say "A pint? That`s very nearly an armful!"

Who`s playing Sid James?

RE: Banksy....Is it Art or Graffiti ??

Quote:
But I believe it has to be first and foremost graffiti, and if it isnt well then the police should never pick up anyone ever again for painting on property when they shouldnt. Quality or "reputation" is not a justifiable reason to be above the law or to be treated any differently to another citizen

Very good point. By definition graffiti is unauthorised, so it`s simply not possible for the law to recognise Banksy`s art without giving licence to all the crap sprayed by talentless little taggers. We can`t realistically expect police officers, magistrates and judges to differentiate good graffiti from bad.

RE: Moral Dilemma!

Quote:
I feel sorry for the girl who has lost her family pictures, which may not be replaceable, but I also feel that anyone who films such awful things are pretty f***ing low.

Interesting that you felt sorry for the girl after you saw `normal` pictures of her family. We all like to believe we could spot (and avoid) such nasty specimens, but the truth is they live quietly and politely for 99% of the time. Bullies only show their true colours when they think they can get away with it.

Now shop the cowardly bitch and let the family see her for what she really is.

RE: Blackmail Royal named...

Damn! This story has given me a craving for a certain foil-wrapped mint flavour chocolate biscuit.

Can you still get them in the shops?

RE: Phrases that annoy

Here`s a wacky one I`ve heard often around North Wales: "What it is, like, is..."

What it is, like, is a crap way of saying "it is".

RE: Phrases that annoy

24 7.

I had to laugh when some pie-faced harridan told me that she looks after kids "24 7 a day!" Either her maths was very wrong indeed or she`s living in dog years. :D

RE: humax pvr

For me, the big advantages of the upgrade were:

Ability to select and delete multiple recordings instantly without arsing about in the menu system.
Timer slots increased to 50.
Search results increased to 250.

RE: Kate McCann to be named a suspect.

The following quote has just been removed from this timesonline article:

"They hope to have this ridiculous situation sorted out long before Christmas," the source said. "It could be a quiet word in an ear; at higher levels it could be a direct approach to the judge or prosecutors saying, 'This is the case as it looks from our point of view, we would urge you not to go any further.

>:( Team McCann are getting bloody sinister now.

RE: McCanns to use fund to pay legal expenses.

Quote:
Did you hear that they have hired, or want to hire, General Pinochet`s lawyer who prevented his extradition? Nice company. :/

They also represented Chris Langham.

RE: Kate McCann to be named a suspect.

Quote:
this is too odd the way the police has search for this child all this time and only now they figure one of the parents is at fault.

They probably had suspicions since Day 1, but couldn`t do anything until the forensics lab in Britain came up with some usable evidence.

RE: McCanns to use fund to pay legal expenses.

This is from the News of the World, so take it with a pinch of salt:

Quote:
The McCanns now fear the cops may be about to arrest and charge them. Gerry told us: "Our lawyer said the weight of it is that, under the Portuguese legal system, they`ve got enough to move forward against us."

Then he revealed they may consider flying in a crack legal team from the UK to assist their Portuguese advisor.

But he confessed he is frustrated they are not allowed to use any of the £800,000 Madeleine Fund— boosted by celebrity appeals including Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling and soccer star David Beckham—to pay their mounting legal bills.

"It seems like a disaster that we`ve got this huge donated fund and now we`re not allowed to use it for legal costs because we`re under suspicion," said Gerry.

Cheeky bugger!

This has to be a publicity stunt to get fan feedback!

You might be right. I`ve been `acquiring` this file for the last couple of hours and PG2 has only registered two attempted connections by Cybersurf Inc. PG2 always rejects loads of IPs whenever I`m `acquiring` anything vaguely popular.

RE: Natural Justice?

Bet he`s gonna hit the compo jackpot. >:(

RE: Is

David, I mentioned your comparison between Torture and Slasher films because your comment Quote:
in times gone by the director and the director were firmly on the side of the `girl being chased`, rather than the pyscho with a knife.
seemed to take a rose-tinted view of the good old days.

Let`s not forget that Ye Olde `Torture Pr0n` films like Last House on the Left and Cannibal Holocaust were huge mainstream hits in the early days of video. Both films are now only available in cut editions because society and the censors find sexualised violence and animal mutilation unacceptable.

There`s no need to fear the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse every time a new Saw or Hostel sequel is released uncut. Our censors are getting the balance about right.

RE: Is

Quote:
Horror films have a masochistic element to them inasmuch that watching them can be a harrowing experience, just like a rollercoaster ride. The difference with the new generation of torture movies is that you get the feeling that the filmmakers` sympathies lie with the torturer rather than the victim - in times gone by the director and the director were firmly on the side of the `girl being chased`, rather than the pyscho with a knife.

You`re being a bit selective there, David. In the vast majority of `70s & `80s Slasher movies, the murders are seen from the murderer`s POV and the victims are mostly shallow and selfish brats for whom its difficult to feel any sympathy. The director and audience`s allegiance only changes during the final reel when the virtuous survivor(s) fights back.

RE: Is

Has anyone mentioned rollercoaster rides yet? Surely these "Torture Pr0n" movies are just another way to put yourself through a gut-wrenching trauma without being at any real risk, aren`t they?
