Identity

RWB (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 22nd June 2003, 20:26

Just went to see this for a bit of Sunday afternoon entertainment at my local UCI.

To put it bluntly, this is definitely worth seeing, and works as a competent yet slightly confusing thriller. Very good performances and direction are combined with the odd sign of a potential plot hole, and although the ending is a bit of a cop-out, the final seconds and idea compensate. I will be getting this on DVD, that`s for sure.

I`m not going to say anything more for fear of giving anything away, but think the style of Psycho combined with some slasher moments...

It`s been said that to really enjoy this film, you should leave after 80 minutes. I disagree, the film, although stuffed with cliched characters, is held together by strong performances and atmospheric set-pieces.

The ending is a tad predictable, and a bit unbelieveable (How did **************** manage to do that thing with the basball bat?) until you remember who all these people essentially are

A very enjoyable film, even after the cop-out.

Identity is my film of the year (so far)... But what is with everyone bitching about the end of the film? Was it too complicated for people to understand? A bit too left-field?

The twist did sour it slightly though more because of the fact I thought it was revealed a bit too early for my liking. Still a bloody good film overall though and yep it is held together by quite a good range of strong performances. Mind you of course the cliched characters are understandable in the context of the film though.

Hands up who guessed which one it was though??? :D

MAJOR SPOILERS

Nope, quite the opposite if you ask me. Identity is a very dumb film. I mean, it opens with us learning there is a guy with "mulitple personalities". FIRST MAJOR CLUE PEOPLE. I guessed the "middle of the film" twist when Ray Liotta showed up. As for the end twist, I didn`t predict that, but then, I thought it was trying to be somewhat believable (even if it was all in the guys head). So having a small child decapitating someone seemed almost impossible to me.

I was looking forward to this, as I had heard it has great twists. Sadly, I guessed the important one. It was an interesting concept, but was poorly executed. Although it was fun to see each "character" interact with each other in the first 40 minutes.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, no matter how wrong it is ;-)

Yeah, it was worth a watch - I will probably get it on DVD for the first half alone.

I really enjoyed most of it. It was an atmospheric slasher, and much better than that urban legends/valentine crap.
Sadly I too was dissapointed with the ending. It just spoilt the whole movie in my opinion.

yeah i sussed the twists very quickly...when the characters gathered and u see there is no Alfred Molina amongst them my suspicions from the first few minutes were confirmed...

still it wasnt a bad movie but i felt there were too many obvious clues...i could imagine the film maker sat behind mesaying...`
`look the LITTLE BOY IS LOOKING SHIFTY`...
`yes this guy WHO IS NOWHERE NEAR THE MOTEL HAS A MULTIPLE PERSONALITY DISORDER`
`RAY LIOTTA IS A POLICEMAN LOOK HE IS A GOOD GUY`!!!!

i did enjoy it though...not seen a film like that for yrs....woulda loved it if it was more subtle...

I was initially a bit let down when we found out who all the people in the motel were - it was bit like "and I woke up and it was all a dream" - but then as the rest of the film played out, along with the final, final twist, I think it worked great.

A lot of people have said Quote:
leave before the end
but then all you`d be left with is a (admittedly above average) slasher movie.

I thought the twists certainly added to the movie rather than took anything away.

Amusingly, the plot seemed a bit much for the five teenage girls sitting in front of me at the cinema who, after the credits rolled, looked totally bewildered and resorted to having me give them a 5 minute explanation of exactly what had just happened....

Best bit of IDENTITY info:

The bloke that wrote the film also wrote & directed the "Jack Frost" movies - no not the Michael Keaton one, the mutant-killer-snowman versions!!
