Star Wars: an epic or a money making machine for George?

rakhee (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 15th September 2003, 20:23

Star Wars is still the best saga of all time. People say that George is in for the money, this i do agree with this because you want to make a little something out of whatever you do. but i think goerge`s life is star wars and with out it he would be lost.he could continue with the new jedi order but it wouldnt be the same, he knows this because he knows it wouldnt work. so if he was in it for the money why would he give up a chance to do the new jedi order.

I enjoyed `Episode I`, didn`t think too much of `Episode II`. I have seen a brief bit of `Episode IV` - nothing special, so overall I don`t rate it that highly.

A brief bit???

I`m sorry, but your opinion is just not valid on the Original Trilogy if you haven`t actually seen it all. That should apply to any film.

I believe Lucas has made his fortune and now he wants to get back to advancing film technology with HDDV filmmaking. Have a look at `Once Upon A Time In Mexico` when it comes out, as that was shot on the same digital cameras as Attack Of The Clones.

When you mention Star Wars people still think of the Original Trilogy. I find that most people don`t like the prequels, although I love AOTC and still like TPM to a certain degree. But the Star Wars Trilogy is what got me into film, and for me the experience of watching Star Wars will never be topped. No true film fan can deny the genius of Star Wars, nor deny the huge impact it had on the film industry (for better or worse ;) ).

For me, Star Wars was a large part of my life. I must have seen the original trilogy about 200 times. I can literally explain each film shot for shot and all the dialogue/camera movements/music cues that go along with them. That may sound sad, but I could still watch Star Wars an infinite amount of times.

I don`t really care what Lucas` true intentions are, because he gave a large part of my childhood, which I still carry with me today.

Star Wars is the greatest story ever told, and by the sounds of it Episode 3 is going to be ace. So the Star Wars saga will be a great story from Episode 2 right through to Episode 6. Episode 1 was a fun film but the story had little to do with the overall saga, and it now looks like a missed opportunity.

But I can`t wait for Episode 3 :D

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, no matter how wrong it is ;-)

Episode 1 was moderate, Episode 2 was shhhheeeeeeeeiiiiiiite!!!!!!!!

Original trilogy was brilliant, the new films are just a money making scheme.

However, IMHO the LOTR trilogy is going to top even the original Star Wars trilogy if it finishes as well as it should.

The original Star Wars trilogy was spectacular especially when you consider it was 20-26 years ago. I like the new films and so do my older two kids (10 + 11 now), it`s shame you don`t get the s*** your pants at bed time fear factor any more though, like vader crushing the rebels windpipe (great sound effect) and then tossing him aside like a rag doll (my kids hate that bit but then they`re girls) or even the mind probe with its f*** off big needle and dramatic accompanying music, lightsaber severed arms with blood on the floor to emphasize etc etc etc .

I think its too much about film category ratings and of course $$$$$ money now days which is a shame cos lucas doesn`t really need the money and could have brought out a new 18 rated trilogy based on the same new fantastic ground breaking technology for the old original fans that made him what he is today.

My kids would still be happy with Spy Kids 3D or Disney, we`d have loved what he did even more and there`d be no constant slating and debating goin` on for the last few years!

Just a view after a vodka red bull or two......

The original trilogy was pretty influential for me as well, but I look back on it fondly rather than getting worked up about it. I think now the franchise is more about George Lucas upsetting people than making money. If he wanted to make money, he`d be concentrating on exploiting the original trilogy (a la Evil Dead trilogy) rather than making new movies which people might not be bothered going to see.

The original 3 are small triumphs in the field of film-making. Lucas sacrificed everything to get A New Hope made, even foregoing his paycheque, only demanding 100% of the proceeds from the merchandising (which was unheard of at the time) From this he made enough money to make Empire, and from this the studio was interested enough in the franchise enough to finance Jedi.

Whatever you think of him, he`s got a smart head on his shoulders. I like the films immensely, even though some of his casting decisions are laughable.

Lucas now has enough money to basically do what he wants, and he`s decided to tell the rest of the story he originally wanted to tell. To use a JK quote, `I`m writing this story for myself, I`m just lucky so many other people want to know how it ends".

The naysayers can bemoan the SW films all they like, but it all comes back down to the individual person`s opinion. I for one love the films and hope to see part 3 in the first week of opening.

Never rated Star Wars much, even when it came out in `77 - ok movie to pass the time I suppose (maybe I was too old at 16!).
Anyway I still can`t see what all the fuss is about.
And number 1 movie of all time? No way.

American Graffiti - now that`s a cool movie.

The origional three films in 1978 onwards were excellent, I could not wait for each one in turn even though they were years apart. Why?, Because of the great acting banter between Luke, Lela, Hans Solo and the rest, it made you want to bond with the actors, the drama, their sadness, their sucesses, there was realism.

Now we come to the new films, the acting is DIABOLICAL. You feel the actors are saying `give me my money and I will blow & go` .

As an avid star wars fan, making the above statement does not come lightly as the special effects, the storylines, and the action is very good in the new films, but it is the acting unfortunatly that let it all down, and the blame goes to the Director for allowing such performances to be screened.

So in all honesty I do not really care if the last one ever comes out, I am so sad to say.

As a comparision, to see REAL acting today, you only have to look at the two `Lord of the rings` films to know how to sway an audience by a realistic performance.
