Page 1 of So who here thinks `The Hobbit` and `The Silmarillion` will be made soon?

I think the former would be great for Jackson to tackle at some point in his career, although he won`t want to be pigeon-holed as the `Tolkien guy`. I haven`t heard great things about `The Silmarillion`, so I am unsure about this.

Silmarillion would be unfilmable. And I thought that I had read somewhere that there were already plans to make The Hobbit with Ian McKellen signing up...but maybe I`m just imagining it all... :/

I would have thought the hobbit would soon be made into a film, but I think the only way the Silmirillian would be made is as a mini series - it covers over a thousand years of the history of middle earth, including numerous battles, seiges, betrayals, love and honour stories ..... all with a cast of thousands.

Oh, and Galadrial was there at the beginning.

I couldn`t read the Silmirillian (spelling?), gave up after a chapter or so, found it too hard going after The Hobbit and LOTR. :)

Definitely think they should make The Hobbit though, with the same actors from LOTR where possible (before they get too old in Bilbo`s case).

If Peter Jackson does do The Hobbit it wont be for quite a long time as he is currently doing King Kong

Funny, I read the title and knew straight away (well, assumed) that you`d not read Silmarillion Rik.
In my opinion, a load of unreadable crap. Got a bit further than RJS but it was bad. Won`t be made.

Roll on The Hobbit though..:-)

The problem with the silmarillion is that it reads more like a history book - there are some great stories in there, but in between those it can be hard going. It doesn`t help that there are hundreds of names in there, and that the same person might have 3 or 4 different names, and lots of the names sound similar (Fingon, Finrod, Fingolfin, Finafin, Finwe, Turin, Hurin, Huor)

But the underlying story is good - Melkor causes problems, makes the elves go against the god, Melkor nicks the silmarillions, the elves then go after Melkor in middle earth, make great cities and kingdoms then basically get wiped out by melkor until the Gods come back and save them.

You also get the story behind the rings of power and the one ring and more information on Isildur (In the film, he luckily cuts off Saurons fingers, in the book Sauron is disabled by Isildurs father and the king of the Elves, then Isildur takes the ring from a well and truely defeated Sauron)

Inbetween we have battles, betrayals, love stories, greed, hate, magic and loads of other things.

agree with the thought that Silmarillion would make a better miniseries than a film, for the reasons craig mentions above. Its a great book, unfortunately people tend to read the first "story" and give up, which is a mistake as its quite weak, the book does get better, got everything that would make for compulsive viewing imho.

The Hobbit is to be released on December 19th 2006.

Downloaded a trailer, 20 meg, and by christ does it look the business. Smaug burning Laketown (I think).

Ian Holm,Ian McKellen and Andy Sirkis are the only actors listed at the end of the demo.
